Monthly Report – October, 2012
October was another steady month with 49 runs for the month. There were 30 calls in the
Village of Cayuga Heights, 10 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 9 mutual aid requests. We
had 30 EMS runs and 19 fire calls. On the 29 th of October we had 20 members of the
department standing by during “Super Storm Sandy”. These members spent the
afternoon and evening preparing pumping equipment, chainsaws and other equipment in
case we were needed during the storm. We had many of our members stay over at the
station just in case it got bad. As we all found out the storm did not, thankfully, turn out
as predicted for our area.
We finished up the fall recruit training classes and have moved on to the checklist
process with our new members. Not only did they complete the three all day recruit
classes but they all took CPR and are now certified AHA CPR providers. We require all
members of the department to hold valid American Heart Association CPR cards. The
AHA requires recertification every two years which we do in January at our annual
training. October trainings included forcible entry training for all members. There is an
amazing simulator at the training center that allows for hands on dynamic training on
how to breech doors with hand tools. We also did training on ladder movement and
positions in the middle of the month.
October was a busy month at the fire station as well. Early in the month we hosted the
Cayuga Heights Elementary School 3 rd graders for their annual field trip for fire
prevention. The whole class walked to the station and spent the morning learning about
escape plans, tools that fire fighters use and then they got to use our Bullex Fire
Extinguisher Trainer. A good time was had by all. We also had our annual open house at
the station on the weekend of October 8 th . It was very well attended by members of the
community.
The members of the department are very excited for Movember again. We are looking
forward to looking good in our mustaches and supporting the fight against prostate
cancer.
There was in incident involving E202 in October after the open house. The driver of the
apparatus got to close to a telephone pole at the entrance to the fire station and knocked
one of the quartz lights off the officer’s side of the truck and caused some body damage
to the vehicle. The truck will be going to the maintenance facility in Buffalo the first
week in December for repairs. We found this to be the most economical solution for the
repair. One of the air handling units in the bunker area has a cracked pipe in the unit itself
requiring repair. We are looking to have this project done early in November.
That is my report for October.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
