Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – April, 2012
Another busy month with 49 runs. There were 27 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights,
16 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 6 mutual aid requests. We had 27 EMS runs and 22
fire calls. In the middle of the month we responded to a structure fire on Sunset Drive.
With a rapid response from our members we were able to quickly suppress the fire that
started in the ceiling of the structure. For this incident we requested mutual aid from the
Lansing Fire Department and the Ithaca Fire Department.
In April we finished up the recruit classes early in the month and turned the probies loose
to work on checklists. We went to Lansing’s Central Station in late April to do car fire
training. We acquired several old cars and removed the gas tanks from them. After we
made them safe we loaded them with straw and set them on fire. This is a very dynamic
training. Earlier in the month we acquired two vehicles for our station and used them to
do vehicle extrication. We were very pleased with these two trainings because we have
been having a hard time recently getting used cars for trainings.
April was an extremely busy month for the department at special events. Early in the
month we participated in the Chris Bordoni funeral. We provided L231 to suspend the
Stars and Stripes above Route 13 when the procession entered Ithaca from Syracuse and
then at then again on the day of the funeral to suspend the colors at the entrance of the
cemetery. Many of our members attended the service in uniform. The next week we
held the E202 dedication. It was a wonderful event at the station and many members of
the Josh and Becky’s family as well as several members of the Alexandria Fire
Department attended to honor Josh’s memory. That evening we had our Annual
Installation Dinner. It was also a memorable evening. Many of our alumni members
attended both events. It was a great weekend.
In late April the New York State Department of Health came to the station and did an
inspection of our EMS operations. This involved a full inspection of our rescue vehicle,
supply room, EMS policies and procedures and our record keeping. This inspection took
an entire afternoon. According to the inspector from the DOH Bureau of EMS we
“knocked the inspection out of the park”. Rescue Director Adam Breslin and Asst.
Rescue Director Lindsay Tamborelle are to be commended for their continuing efforts to
keep everything running smoothly.
We are looking forward to the annual yard sale at the station in May. We are collecting
items at this time and each year the sale seems to get bigger. We are amazed at how
popular the yard sale has become. We are in the process of having our heavy trucks
inspected this month. We have placed the order for our new airpacks and anticipate a late
June delivery. There will be two training sessions for familiarization with our firefighters
and one training session for our officers to go over maintenance and training on the new
system. We are very pleased with the upgrade to our system.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
