Honorable Kate Supron
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – February, 2012
It was a relatively steady month for the department with 43 runs. There were 29 calls in
the Village of Cayuga Heights, 12 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 2 mutual aid requests.
We had 29 EMS runs and 14 fire calls. The calls for the month were routine.
We held five trainings last month at the station. Early in the month we did a FAST
training for team members to keep our skills sharp. On February 7th we did “Wildcard
Training” and that evening focused on probationary and interior checklist work for those
members who needed to finish skills for their status changes. We did have all seven of
our recruits finish their probationary checklists. Late in the month we covered engine
company and truck company skills. On the fire ground the general rule is that the
“engine company” is responsible for fire attack and suppression and the “truck company”
is responsible for ventilation and search. In a paid fire department you are assigned to a
specific piece of apparatus and you can hone one set of skills, but in a volunteer
department, we are required to be competent in both sets of skills since we never know
which piece of apparatus we will be on. We can also never count on all of our trucks
getting out for each call so at times even if you ride the engine to the call you will be
required to perform “truck” skills. This is why we drill constantly on both skill sets. The
last training of the month held at the station was for EMS providers. We hosted a
training for the Tomkins County EMS CQI Committee. Dr. Stefek, a cardio surgeon at
CMC, came to the station and did training on Advanced EKG Interpretation. This
training was open to all county EMS providers and was well attended. This is the second
time we have hosted for the CQI committee. They enjoy our station because of the large
room and access to audio and visual equipment. We accepted another 7 new members to
the department this past month. We will start the probationary training on March 10th
and continue through April.
Six of our current members and 12 of our former members traveled to Alexandria
Virginia last month for the services for our friend and former member of the Cayuga
Heights Fire Department Joshua Weismann. It was an amazing service and the
Alexandria Fire Department made every effort to include our department. Josh was laid
to rest with all honors. On April 21st we will hold a service at the fire station and
dedicate E202 to Josh. This is also the day of our Annual Installation Banquet. Many of
our former members had expressed a desire to come to Ithaca for a service for Josh as
well as this year’s banquet so we thought this would be a good way to accommodate
everybody. Josh’s wife Becky and their parents will attend the ceremony and the
banquet. We will do the dedication service and celebration of Josh’s life at the station at
1:00 in the afternoon and then the banquet at 6:00 that evening. All members of the
Board of Trustees will be invited to both events.
Looking ahead to the spring we are hoping to hold our Annual Fire Department
Community Yard sale on the weekend of May 12th and 13th. I will be seeking permission
from the board to hold this event at the March Board Meeting.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
