There were 30 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 10 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 3 mutual aid requests. We had 30 EMS runs and 13 fire calls. It was a routine month for the department with no significant calls that stood out. Training slows down in May with the school year coming to a close. It is difficult for many of our members to attend trainings due to school finals and all the activities that herald the end of the academic year. We did have our annual Graduates Dinner at the station. At this barbeque we recognize our graduating members. We invite the graduates and their families and thank them for the service they provided to our community. Our events calendar in May also was pretty unremarkable. We did send a crew of firefighters to some pre-school demonstrations to show the children the apparatus and talk to them about safety. We speak to the kids about fire prevention but really stress wearing bike helmets and seatbelts. These are things that preschool kids can relate to. We find that at that age they do not really understand when we talk a lot about fire prevention. This subject becomes more real to them at the kindergarten and 1st grade levels. The annual yard sale was a great success. We worked hard and were much more selective as to the items that we took this year. We stopped accepting clothing and books and this made the week much easier. We figured the clothing room consumed around 50 man hours of labor to get organized and we never seemed to sell the books that we got. We have streamlined the collection process and started organizing the tables on the first day and this lessened the stress as well. We made a little less this year in profit and attribute some of that to the lack of clothing sales. It was a great week for the department. Every member contributed to the success of the event. Looking ahead to the summer we see a slower training pace. We will pick up training again in the fall and have started preparing for the Fall 12 Recruit Class. We already have several people who have inquired about membership. We have been told that our new air packs will be delivered in late June by the vendor. When the packs are delivered we will hold 2 training sessions for all members on use of the new system. We will also hold 1 training for the officers and senior members on maintenance. These trainings will be conducted by Tyler Fire employees and are part of the cost of the system. We are very excited about this upgrade to our system. Annual hose and ladder testing is planned for the summer by outside vendors. I wi ll be contacting the Town of Ithaca DPW and Bolton Point sometime soon and hope to get hydrant testing done this summer in the village and the town. We look forward to a safe summer. Sincerely, George Tamborelle Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
