Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – November, 2012
There were 46 calls for the fire department in the month of Movember. There were 28
calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 4 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 4 mutual aid
requests. We had 27 EMS runs and 19 fire calls. There were really no unusual calls for
the month. We are currently at 536 calls for the year. Unless we have an incredibly busy
month of December we should be a few calls below last year’s total. It does not seem
like we have slowed down any though.
Training is going well at the station. All of the current recruits are diligently working on
their checklists. The weekend “checklist parties” are going very well. We consistently
have 5 to 8 recruits at the weekend sessions. This is very helpful for them and us. At the
Movember fire council meeting we decided not to run a spring recruit class this year. We
will instead use the weekend training sessions to take our members to the burn tower and
get them through interior checklists and ensure they are comfortable with the skills they
need to perfect to become interior firefighters. We will slow down with our training
through December and January. We will still hold our weekly trainings but our
attendance usually drops through the holidays. Training will pick back up in late January
when everybody returns after the break. Our annual mandatory OSHA refresher training
will be held on January 26 th for all members. Not attending this training results in
immediate restriction of a member until they make the class up.
E202 is in Buffalo at this time to repair the body damage from last month. We took it to
Buffalo for the repair because the estimate for repair from the KME service center there
was several thousand dollars cheaper then having it done locally. We are also having
them look at some minor warranty issues that we have with the truck. It should be back
in the station by the second week in December. We had some electrical issues with U242
last month. We contacted the village DPW and they got the truck in immediately and
replaced the alternator and batteries in an afternoon. We were very appreciative that this
happened so quickly because we had a burn training that evening at the tower and needed
to the truck to carry supplies to the tower. L231 is having some minor electrical issues
that we have been in contact with E-One about. At this point they in no way hinder the
operation of the truck and we hope to get the issues resolved quickly.
We currently have one open bunker room to fill at some point in the near future. Rescue
Director Adam Breslin recently took a job as a flight paramedic based in Watertown. He
was not able to fit in bunker duty nights with his work schedule so he decided to move
from the station to the house at 825 Hanshaw Road. He is still in town four days a week
which works out very well for the department. We posted the vacancy to the department
but probably will not fill the room until late spring. This time of the year all of our
potential bunkers have signed leases for housing and have a hard time breaking them.
We have had several of our members express interest in temporarily bunking over the
holiday break and this summer.
We hope everybody has a safe holiday season.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
