Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – July, 2012
The volunteers of Cayuga Heights responded to 43 calls in July. There were 23 calls in
the Village of Cayuga Heights, 13 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 7 mutual aid requests.
We had 20 EMS runs and 23 fire calls. On July 16 th the department responded to fire
alarm activation at the community center at Hasbrouck Apartments. The first arriving
units found that the community center was filled with smoke and that there was a fire in a
dryer in the laundry room. The fire had gotten out of the dryer and was extending up the
wall of the room and into the ceiling. Quick actions from the first arriving units
suppressed the fire and stopped further damage to the building. It was determined that an
extremely overfilled dryer had caused the fire.
Early in July we went to the inlet by the county training facility and did draft training.
There are times when we need to draft water from a standing water source as a supply for
fire attack. Our neighboring departments are not fully hydranted so we have been called
on to assist with water supply from ponds and creeks in the past. Later in the month we
did training on breaching walls at a fire scene. This training is used to train firefighters to
move from one room to another if the doorways are blocked. We have a wall simulator
that we can place sheetrock in. We break through the sheetrock and then move through
the wall with all of our gear on. Late in the month we did our second training with Tyler
Fire Equipment on the new air pack system and the put the packs on the trucks and in
service. We have another training with Tyler scheduled for late August to get all of our
members who were gone for the summer up to speed. The last training of the month was
on drags and carries. We practiced packaging “injured” firefighters and moving them up
and down ladders and stairs.
Looking ahead to the fall we are planning on recruiting through September and starting
the Fall Recruit Class in early October. We are hoping for a class of 10 new members.
We are starting a little later than this fall. We are planning on doing fire prevention
trainings with the fraternities and sororities in late August and early September. We also
hope to get word about the department out to village residents at the block party on the
21 st .
It will be good to have all of our members back in town after the summer break. We are
looking forward to a productive fall. All of our bunker rooms are full at this time. We
appreciated having two summer bunkers at the station all summer. Their presence helped
immensely with our call responses.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
