Honorable Kate Supron
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – October, 2011
In October we slowed the pace with 45 calls for the month. We had 31 calls in the
Village of Cayuga Heights, 12 in the Town of Ithaca and 2 mutual aid requests. We had
36 EMS calls and 9 fire calls. As you can see it was an extremely busy month for the
EMTs of the department. On October 6th we were called to a home on Muriel Street for a
smoke condition. We arrived on scene to find a heavy smoke condition visible from the
street with one resident out of the home. We moved to the front of the house to find an
elderly woman who stated that he husband was still inside the home trying to locate the
source of the smoke. We immediately evacuated him from the home. The source of the
heavy smoke condition turned out to be a heating pad with plastic filling left in the
microwave for 30 minutes instead of the recommended 3 minutes. We removed the
microwave and placed ventilation fans at the doors to help remove the smoke. The home
owners were embarrassed and grateful.
In October we held two of our three recruit classes. These days were very long. We
decided to do a CPR original course during recruit training thi s time. With the number of
EMS calls we run we felt it was important to get CPR done at the beginning of the
recruit’s membership. This required us to shift the training days around and lengthen
them to fit in all of the equipment evolutions that we usually do in the afternoon of the
first day. They were long days but there were no complaints. We also, for the first time,
did the three sessions over consecutive weekends to get these recruits through the initial
training and onto checklist work. This worked very well for us. All of these recruit
trainings were held on weekends. We still did all of our regular monthly training as well.
We were able to acquire a car for vehicle extrication training. On the 15th of the month
most of our members participated in the airports semi annual disaster drill. This was a
simulated plane crash with more then 40 victims, a fire in the crash simulator and several
cars on fire around the incident location. Our department was instrumental in the success
of the drill.
On October 8th we held our annual Open House. It was a beautiful day for the event and
everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. We had many outside agencies participate in the
Open House. On the 6th of October the Cayuga Heights Elementary School 1st graders
walked to the fire station for their annual fire prevention demonstration. It is a fun day
for the kids as well as the firefighters participating.
In October we replaced the non functioning air conditioning unit at the station. We put
this project out to bid and a local company HSC did the work for us. There seem to be no
other issues at the station at this time. We are working with the CHES PTA in
preparation for their event to be held at the station on November 19th.
The members of the department are once again participating in Movember. Movember is
an annual event to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. All members are
encouraged to sign up and raise money for our team. The gentlemen participating must
attempt to grow mustaches for the event. We are known as Mo Bros while the ladies
participating are referred to as Mo Sistas! Last year our team raised over $1,000. We
hope to do better this year.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
