Re: Trustees embrace Net & Bolt - Every voice needed on Mondayr
Friends,
I have not been able to attend t\/londay Village Board meetings for some months. Here is a statement I just sent to Mayorsupron and the Board, in advance of ionighls meeting liJ;; not _substitute for presence, but it says what I would say if Iwere there. -- Karen K,aufmann, 110 Northway RO., V.CH, 257_OS2g
Dear Mayor supron and members of the VCH Board of rrustees,
I am presently unable t^o attend Monday night Village Board meetings, and was unable to attend the Candidates, Forumon Wednesday March g, which'was a oay of religioius observance in my faith tradition,
But I need to go on record, again,.to express my horror, distress and profound sadness at the prospect of net-and-bolt orany other mass slaughter of deelr in my community.
In my view, the Board's; plan for mass killing of a.ny.sort irresponsibly ignores sound science, reasonable alternatives, andthe voices and rights o1l a sukrstetntial number of village and commuirit! residents who have moral, titestyte ano practicalconcerns about a program of municipally-backed slaughter. The interjection of the net-and-bolt mechanism into thediscussion late in the process- to my knowledge, it wis not considered by the Deer Remediation Advisory Committee thatendorsed the plan for which the DEIS was prepared- adds significant disirust and concern to the discussion.
Some questions that have gone unanswered to date:(1) Willthose residents; who oppose slaughter have any rights in site selection- for instance, willthe 500-foot right ofconsent apply- if the rret-and-bolt mechanism is used? Oi will my rights to the peaceful enjoyment of my frop"rty and tofreedom from the moral repugnancy of animal slaughter- anO yesl m-y famity and I are vegetarians by long ethical andlifestyle choice- be held hostage by decisio.ns my neighbors mignt mike to invite slaught6r in their bickyJrds?(2) Who will be conducting. and managing the legal, recorO-t<eeiing, safety-oversighlJnd notice aspects of site selectionand neighborhood assetnt (if that is needed)? ls ihe Board,or its deligneeicapabli of providing oversight of the processat a level of detail that inspires confidence?
(3) Will the Board mernbers have the conviction to stand watch while the slaughter you approve, whether by net-and-boltor other means, is carried out?
(4) Can the Board in good consioience justify the expenditure of up to $1,000,000, over an unknown course of years, forthe deer "remediation" when other local municipal functions- schools, social services, municipal services-- are facinglong{erm cuts in funding and whren other less costly remediation options, such as fencing, are not tried first?(5) What will it say about our cornmunity that we chbose slaughter over peaceful first options, and-- more critically-- thatwe choose an elective program of deer management while others in the wider area suffer a decline in, or witnOrawal of,essential life-sustaining services? No, those Costs do not come from the Village budget; but Village ihoices can feed abroader public perception that the Village and its residents are elitist, arrogantl and bind to social and economic realtties.
I must trust that the Boetrd.will gitre respectful attention to the voices of Villagers who oppose the killing plan. I did notchoose to live in the neighborhood of a slaughter field, and I simply cannot iccept that slaughter in m/ neighbors, backyards is a moral, rerasonablel, or viable ipproach to the presence-- or the inconvenience, or the instancesof documented conflict-- of deer in our community.
Please exercise the trus;t that har; been placed in you, as Mayor and Trustees, wisely, and with due regard for the realconcerns of all your constituents.
