Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – May, 2011
We slowed a little in May with a total of 45 runs in the month. We had 25 calls in the
Village of Cayuga Heights, 8 in the Town of Ithaca and 5 mutual aid requests. We had
28 EMS calls and 17 fire calls. On May 5th we were requested to assist the Ithaca Fire
Department with one engine to the scene of a structure fire and one ladder to the city to
cover at central fire station. We assembled two crews and responded to both requests.
The crew that went to the scene of the fire assisted units already on scene for four hours
during the operation. The crew that staffed the ladder in the city of Ithaca assisted with
other calls in the city during the fire.
May was a wrap up training month for us. We did a live burn at the tower in the
beginning of the month. This training gave the newly appointed officers a chance to
assume command roles and lead teams during evolutions. Right before the yard sale we
did an Incident Command Training. We used to the yard sale as a simulated multi area
event and split members into different sections with specified tasks on and off site. Each
section reported in to command with progress reports and when assignments were
completed. This taught many of our new members that ICS can be applied to any event
be it on the fire ground or off. After we took delivery of the new truck KME sent a
trainer and we held three separate training sessions to get our apparatus operators trained
on how to operate E202. All members were encouraged to attend the training and it went
very well for everybody. We are now in our summer training scale down. We will still
hold organized trainings but over the summer we slow things down. We are already
planning out the fall training schedule.
May was a pretty busy month around the station. Early in the month we went to
Pennsylvania to inspect our new engine prior to taking delivery. Everything was in order
at the factory and on May 15th the truck was delivered to the station. We put all the new
attack and supply hose on the truck the day we took delivery. We are still moving loose
equipment around on the truck to get everything in the right spot. Everybody is pleased
with the purchase. The old E202 was picked up on May 18th and made it to Alabama
where it will be refurbished and sold to another fire department. Late in the month we
had our annual yard sale. Over the course of a week we took in donations at the station
and sent members out to pick up larger items. We spent the later part of the week sorting
through all of the donations and then pricing them. The sale on Saturday and Sunday was
a great success. The sale raised a little over $6,000 for the fire company. Everybody
who helped out over the week had a great time.
In May we had some truck maintenance issues. We sent L231 to Lafrance Equipment in
Elmira for its annual pump service and test and to have the ladder serviced. While doing
the pump test a leak was detected through a weld on the discharge manifold. This
required them to take the entire pump apart on the truck to remove the manifold to weld
it. E-One, the manufacturer was contacted the repair will be covered under warranty. We
had work done on 242 as well over the month. We ordered a new LED light bar for the
truck to replace the old halogen bar that is on it now. We are also having all of the
electronics rewired. We have been moving radios around for many years and have
decided it is time to clean up the wiring. There was also a small bit body damage on 243
that was pulled out and buffed as well. We wanted to get all of this work done before the
end of FY 10/11. At this time only E203 needs to have its annual service done. We will
have this work done some time in June or July. We will also have all of our hose tested
over the summer. Ladders and air packs will be tested in the late summer and fall.
The day after the yard sale we had all of the floors refinished at the fire station. We
removed all of the furniture from the first floor on Sunday evening and the floors were
stripped and refinished on Monday. The floors look better than they have in quite a
while. We have three new bunkers at the station. Long time bunker Mike Miriou has
decided to move out the fire station after eight years of living there. Mike was the head
bunker. FF John Putnam will take over as the new head bunker. John Tomasulo and
Matt Morgan both graduated this n and will be moving away. The three new bunkers
will move into the station in early June.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
