HomeMy WebLinkAboutPoppenseik M - DEIS .PDFStatement by Michelle poppensi I am writing this ers a 2O-year res of Cayuga Heights, and as a three-time former empf oyee of the Village th public hearing on the DEIS, there was no apparent interest from the Mayo or Trustees in seeing the comments from the public, even though a vote wa proposed for their January j_Oth meeting. The stack of lettens from citizens in the office for weeks, during which time I never had a request to see any o them, which the Clerk herself did not even knrcw were supposed to be revi by the Board. This attitude clearly showed me that the plan is a don September to late December of 2 observe that aften the December intense criticism and public outc was needed or desired. rk's office, most recently from mid- 10. I was very concerned and upset to deal to these decision makers, regardless of and that no further information or input Be'yond those grave concerns, I shf re concerns that have already been thoroughly detailtld by others abo{rt the DEIS and the deer plan in general. The Trustees have the power and chance to still change their minds. lt is not too late to reconsider,, to take a step b!ck, look at other options, and listen to the public dialogue. l1l takes real strenpth and courage to admit that one is wrong, or needs to rethink a decision, esppcially when considerable time, money and energy have been spent getting to this point. I asrk you: ls it okarl to kill in the nafne of making life easier for a small group of peclple? ls it right to kill a group o{ animals just because they are considered a nuisance to some people? Does it make sense to kill them even though this sanle action has been unsuccessful in other parts of the country? Do we want to teach our children that any choiie, and any action, is better than inaction, evern if it is harmful, barbaric, and lrighly controversial? Many of us think it is not okay to kill for these reasons. I urge you to take more time to consider altelrnatives and piay more attentiop to the people, who have made it clear that the DEIS is not acceptable to tfrem, either as a scientific document, or as a moral option for crcntrolling the depr population in the Village. Thank you.
