Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – November, 2011
November was a relatively quite month for the department with “only” 38 calls. We had
25 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 11 in the Town of Ithaca and 2 mutual aid
requests. We had 28 EMS calls and 10 fire calls. We are at 553 calls for the year to date.
We are currently 16 calls over our total for last year. Late in the month we responded to a
serious motor vehicle incident. On Winthrop Drive at approximately 9:00 in the morning
we responded for a report of a car off the road and into a tree. We arrived to find a victim
in a vehicle with heavy damage in the area of the driver’s door. We immediately
stabilized the vehicle, removed the roof and extricated the patient. He was seriously
injured and transported to a trauma center in Syracuse for treatment. From the time of
the call to the time the patient was extricated was 19 minutes. The crew on this call did
an amazing job.
All of the trainings in November were held away from the fire station. Our first two
trainings of the month were at the county training facility. We did Vent/Enter/Search
training early in the month. At this training we focus on our ladder and search skills. We
use ladders to enter the building and then search for victims. We also covered ventilation
at this training. Ventilation during fire attack is critical. Coordination between ventilation
and attack teams cannot be overstressed. If ventilation is not performed at the proper
time then fires tend to get out of hand quickly during the attack. We need to have some
place to push the heat and smoke from the fire attack and the ventilation team handles
where those byproducts of combustion will go. Our mid month training was first due
company operations. This training worked on the hose advancement and fire attack skills
touched on at the previous weeks training. Late in the month we did a walk though of the
Kendal at Ithaca facility. We do this walkthrough every couple of years to get our newer
members oriented to the facility. We work closely with the Kendal nursing and
maintenance staff on a regular basis during calls. Our EMS training for the month was an
update on BLS (basic life support) skills for our basic EMTs and rescue checklist work
for our new members.
Our fall recruits are doing very well on their checklists. Two of them have already
completed the process and are assisting the other eight on theirs. This is a very motivated
group. We are pleased with their dedication. Most of them are already signed up for the
Spring 2012 Firefighter 1 class. The county was not going to hold a Firefighter 1 class
this spring until we told them we had up to 10 for the class. We had six firefighters from
our spring class complete the NYS Firefighter 1 class in October. All of these firefighters
also took firefighter survival the weekend following their graduation from the first class.
Firefighter survival teaches us how to focus if trapped in a fire and to work at getting
ourselves and our crew out of the hazardous environment. They are all currently working
on their interior checklists.
We hosted the CHES PTA auction at the station on November 19th. This went very well.
The truck bays went through a miraculous change throughout the day and by the evening
the PTA folks with help from some members of the department had transformed that
area. The event was a success and the bays were returned to their normal drab condition
with the trucks back inside within and hour of the end of the auction.
Our annual Movember fundraising event was fantastic. The team raised $3749.00 for
cancer research over the course of the month. Many photos were taken at the December
1st “Shave Off” event. I am sure that they will be shown at the Annual Banquet in April.
Assistant Chief Scott Martling has been the coordinator for our Movember Team for the
past three years. He does a great job getting everybody involved and keeping us “Mo
tivated” every year.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
