Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report – July, 2011
The hectic pace continued in July with 47 runs for the department. We had 24 calls in the
Village of Cayuga Heights, 16 in the Town of Ithaca and 7 mutual aid requests. There
were 22 EMS calls and 25 fire calls. Our major incident for the month involved a
bicyclist who ran into the side of a delivery truck at high speed. This call resulted in the
patient being airlifted to a trauma center for treatment.
Trainings in July were well attended. Early in the month we did an Intro to FAST
training for those members in the department who are getting ready to apply for the team.
We went over riding assignments, equipment that we use for the FAST call and its
location on the truck. This was good for us to do because we have moved equipment
around on E202 and it allowed us to review and revamp our riding assignments. Our
next two trainings were on Truck and Engine Operations. In these two trainings we
focused on the power tools on the all of the apparatus and assignments for first arriving
units. We are using the summer to review all of these skills with the more senior
members of the department. The last training of the month was used to go over patient
packaging at the accident scene. We use back boards, splints and extrication boards in
tight packaging situations. It was pretty warm for this training and we all lost a little
weight that night.
All of our hose testing is done for the year. We had several pieces of our older house fail
testing. When this happens we take it out of service and dispose of it. We will need to
replace some of it to keep spare hose at the station but this will not be a major expense at
this time.
We have picked the dates for the fall recruit class and have determined that we will be
looking for a class of 10 to 12 new members at this time. We have the equipment to
outfit this many new recruits. Recruiting will start in late September. We will be voting
new members in at the beginning of October and then doing the recruit classes the last
two weekends in October and the first weekend in November.
The summer has been busy but fulfilling so far. Busy firefighters seem to be happy
firefighters.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
