August 8, 2011
Speaker,Betsy Root of Trumansburg
I would like to see dialogue between those of us who have stood here and done our
2 minute stands against the Board's Net and Bolt deer management plan as well
written letters and opinion pieces challenging Cayuga Heights Trustees'deer
eradication program. We've heard sound scientific arguments against it,and we've
presented cogent appeals to the Board to reconsider.
At this point, I am at a loss what to add to the deluge of opposition you have faced.
All the valid reasons—scientific, psychological, and moral—to cancel the plan and
consider different options have been expressed. We seem to be talking to a brick
wall. What say you,Trustees? How do you respond?I'd like to ask each one of you:
have you been listening;have you considered the words of your opponents?1),are
you are the least moved by the appeals and advice of both lay citizens and scientists
who oppose your plan?2),are you reconsidering,in your own mind or as a body,
and 3),if not, what would it take to move you away from this net and bolt plan that
has aroused so much rancor in the community at large? Is anyone willing to speak to
these queries?
If any respond,thank them.
Otherwise—it would seem that what we have here is a group of people totally
entrenched, and frankly, just plain stubbornly clinging to a plan out of close-
mindedness and determination not to budge no matter the lack of science
supporting the plan nor the grotesqueness of its method which portends grave
consequences among your constituents and the larger community.
