Dear Ms Mills,
I am unable to attend tonight’s hearing on the Deer Management Plan Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Please
share my comments with the Village Trustees and Mayor.
I am a resident of Cayuga Heights. I have read the DEIS and find that it is an accurate and helpful assessment of our
situation in the Village. I hope the final EIS will build on this excellent and appropriate report.
I have deer in my yard regularly, sometimes it seems hourly. They are indeed a nuisance and I have done all I can to use
“deer resistant” plants. When I first moved to Cayuga Heights that worked. As the herd increased, the deer expanded
what they would eat, most likely of necessity. That the deer eat all my plants is very frustrating, but the DEIS highlights
more serious problems. I have observed over the past several years that the deer are smaller, more ragged in
appearance, and slower toward the end of winter. Their food supply is dwindling.
A personal encounter – during a snowstorm a deer tried to come through my basement window, I think to eat a plant
that was in the window.
We are all aware of the stories of deer attacking dogs and, I fear soon, children.
I encourage you to proceed with the Deer Management Plan, and if possible, to move faster on the culling aspect, to
protect our environment and ultimately the people who live in and drive through Cayuga Heights.
I know this issue is controversial and takes much personal energy. Thank you for dealing with it.
