Subject:Comment on DEIS for Cayuga Heights' Deer Management Plan
Importance:High
Dear Mayor Supron and Trustees,
We were absolutely horrified to learn that Cayuga Heights is considering net-and-bolt as means of controlling the deer
population. This is course of action is inhumane and illegal. We are opposed to your deer-killing program. We believe
that it will have a negative impact on not only Cayuga Heights, but also the greater Ithaca/Tompkins County community,
and that it will degrade our traditions of rational public policy and non-violent conflict resolution. My family moved
from Baltimore to Ithaca precisely to get away from all of the violence and the crime. We never thought that we would
see this level of inhumanity here in our beloved Ithaca!!! We are appalled that net-and-bolt is even a topic being
debated in this community. I encourage you to reconsider and to entertain a more feasible option such as the use of
fences.
I will leave you with these two final thoughts:
“I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.”
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.” -- Gandhi
