Honorable Kate Supron
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Reporl - August, 2010
Arugust continued our very busy summer with 53 calls for the month. There were 29 runs
in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 21 runs in the Town of Ithaca and 3 mutual aid
requests. We had 30 EMS calls and 23 fire calls. We are up 52 calls from this time last
year. We were busy with motor vehicle crash calls in August. There were three MVCs
in August; one of them was serious, with the patient being flow from the scene to a
trztuma center. In August, with the return of the students, we have had an increase in calls
for fire alarm activations. Many of these are from dust stirred up at move in and burnt
food.
We are picking up speed with our fall training calendar. In August we did several
trerinings in preparation for an upcoming live burp in September. On August 19th we did
training at the mall on advancing hose lines 4nd searches for victims' and downed
firefighters. The mall training facility is set up in the unused old movie theaters. We
have a simulated house and a second story escape simulator set up. This is a greatfacility
to train in because we can change the layout of the simulators after each evolution. On
the 24th of August we did training on ,r"n. size up and initial radio reports. Coming up
in September we have a live burn and several skills nights for our members to get back
inLo the swing of things. Our recruit class dates are set for October and November and
we are looking forward to training another group pf members.
We took delivery of the hose and the ventilation fan that we purchased with the donation
from the Triad Foundation. At this point we have enough new cloth jacketed hose to
outfit all the trucks with new attack lines. We are also able to put 300 feet of rubber
jaoketed attack hose off the back of each truck and still have spare hose for trainings. It
is very nice, when at the training tower doing burns, to have training hose. We use the
hand lines off the truck we are using for the fire attack, but for our backup and safety
lines we use the older hose. This allows us to jusi disconnect the training hose from these
trurcks and respond with them if we have an emergency during training.
We have decided to move forward with the low bid from KME for E202. This bid met
all of our specifications and after careful review of the truck committee this bid was
presented to the Public Safety Committee in August. Jeff Silber has put together a
resiolution which he will present to the board at the September meeting. We also sat
down with the Herb Engman and Al Carvill from the Town of Ithaca to inform them that
we are considering the purchase of a new fire truck. This meeting went well and I will be
going to the Town of Ithaca Board Meeting on September 16th io unr*., any questions
they may have regarding this project.
All of our bunker rooms are occupied at this time. Our two newest bunkers moved into
their rooms at the end of August. We have several events coming up in the fall. We have
our annual recruiting drive in early September with the recruiting dinner on September
I(ith atthe station. In early October we will be going to the elementary schools for Fire
Frevention talks with the kindergarteners, I't and 2nd graders. On October 16th we willhele our annual Open House at the station. We have several outside organizations
coming this year including the County SWAT team, the Bullex Fire Simulatorlrailer and
if the weather cooperates this year Guthrie Air will bring a helicopter.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
