Honorable James Gilmore
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report—January, 2010
We started 2010 with a very busy onth. We had 49 calls in January. There were 26
calls in the Village of Cayuga Heigits, 12 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 11 mutual aid
requests. We had 31 EMS runs and 18 fire runs. On January l lth we were dispatched to
the Village Green Office Complex for reports of gas odor and frequent explosions being
reported in that building. Arriving units discovered a problem with the gas powered air
handling units on the roof of the building. Gas was quickly turned off to the complex and
NYSEG was contacted. Fire department units remained on scene until NYSEG secured
the utilities and investigated the cause. We also responded to 11 requests for mutual aid
last month. This is a larger then usual amount of requests but our neighboring
departments call on us to help them with well trained manpower and apparatus. On
January 8th, while responding to a,mutual aid request in Lansing for a motor vehicle
crash, E202 was struck by a passing dump truck. Luckily there were no injuries and the
damage to the truck was cosmetic. The trucking company paid for the repairs and the
truck was only out of service for three days while getting the body work done. FF Mike
Miriou was the driver of the truck and did--an excellent job while driving to this call.
thereby keeping everybody safe in t e truck.
We have picked up the training pace at the start lof the New Year. At the end of January
we held our all day OSHA refresher training. This class covers all of our required OSHA
topics for the year at one time. Ass Chief Dave Wolf put the program together for this
class and taught it. It took six hours to get through all the topics. Every member of the
department save four were on hand for this full, day of training. The missing four have
since sat through the power point presentation and done a written test on the topics
covered. We also had a FAST train' g in the middle of January for members of the team.
February trainings include training on radio use during search evolutions, our EVOC
training and the first recruit training session for the new members. We are looking
forward to warm weather so we can get outside and train. We can do many things in the
station and at the movie theater training facility but it will be nice to use water in training
again.
Our spring recruit class is set. We accepted 11 new members into the fire department on
February 7th. We had 15 people int rview for the department and, while we were looking
for a smaller classes for the spring, we had so many strong candidates that we felt we
could not turn some of these people away until the fall. The class is made up completely
"IIEL PREVENT FIRES„
of Cornell students and three Ithaca High School seniors. We are pretty excited about
this group. They will all be around for at least 2 1/2years and several are planning on
graduate school at Cornell after they are done undergrad. It will be a busy spring training
these new members and bringing them up to speed, blot we look forward to having new
faces around the station.
As stated in last months report, Lt. Dave Openshaw hIas put together a fire safety lecture
geared toward fraternities, sororities and other high ocjcupancy student housing. With the
help of Cornell's Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs we presented this lecture to
most of the six of the eight houses in our district and have scheduled the other two in the
coming weeks. This lecture proved to be very informative for the students at the
presentations and the information was pertinent not o y to those living in the houses but
to those living in residences in College Town as we 1. We look forward to doing this
presentation at least once a year.
All the apparatus is in working order and we have Thad no major issues with the fire
station in the past month.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
