There were 34 calls in the Village of Cayuga Heights, 12 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 3 mutual aid requests.. We had 36 EMS runs and 13 fire runs. It was a fairly busy month for the department. Late in the month during the snow storm we staffed the fire station with extra manpower from Wednesday night until Saturday night to help cover calls. Luckily we did not see a major increase in our call volume for the storm. Many of our members were happy to spend these nights at the station to ensure that they did not have to respond on snowy roads dining the storm. On the Saturday after the storm we got 15 firefighters together in the afternoon and went around the entire district and shoveled out all of the fire hydrants. While doing this we made sure that we were able to open the caps on the hydrants as well. We were able to access all the fire hydrants and spin most of the caps off. This job took 15 people four hours to do. We split the district into four sections and each crew was responsible for their area. This was also a great district familiarization exercise for the new members who helped out. We had a very busy training month in February as-well. In the month we had two all day - Saturday training sessions. On the 13th we had an EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) at the station. This was very well attended. We had 21 people from the department participate in the class. With this class these members can now take any NYS training class that has EVOC as a prerequisite. On the 20th we had all of the new members at the station for a full day of Recruit Training. This was an extremely busy day since we are putting three days worth of material into two. Our new members responded well and got outfitted with gear and pagers and started to learn about being firefighters. Through the month we also held trainings on sprinkler systems, ropes and knots and ladders. On the Thursday evening of the snow storm we had as FAST training that 30 people attended. This may have been because we cooked a large pasta dinner and everybody was here because of the storm but it was well attended and everybody got a chance to participate in evolutions. Normally FAST trainings are limited to those on the team and those working to get on the team. Nominations for the 2010/11 officers will be at the March Fire Company Meeting. At this time we will nominate for the Chief Officers, Lieutenants, Assistant Rescue Director positions as well as the Fire Company Officer positions. For the first time in many years we have people running for all available positions. We have ensured that all those "HELP PREVENT FIRES" running have the required classes and the time in the department to be qualified to run. It appears that we have a very good slate of officers and at this time it seems as if all positions are unopposed. The department elections will be held March 28t" and I will present the slate of officers for the board's approval at the April Village Board Meeting. The spring appears to be filling up with events. We have our Annual Installation Banquet on April 17t at the Country Club of Ithaca. The date for the Annual Yard Sale is set for May 22nd and 23`d. This is a great event for the department and company as well as for the community. We have also learned that there will be a golf tournament at the Cornell Golf Course on June 28th to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. This event is being put together by the Ithaca Fire Department and is a national level event for this foundation. They have asked our department to help out by staffing a first aid tent and provide fire and EMS coverage for the event. We are honored that this event is being held in our district and will assist in any way possible to ensure that it goes off without any problems. This has been a good onth and we are all looking forward to spring and warm weather.
