Honorable Kate Supron
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report - April, 2010
April proved to lbe avery busy month with 49 calls. There were 27 calls in the Village of
Cayuga Heights,, 18 calls in the Town of Ithaca 'and 4 mutual aid requests. We had 2g
EMS runs and 2l fire runs. We had several calls of significance in April. On April 3.d,
while having a barbeque at the station, there was a large grass fire in Newfield. Crews
were called frorn all over Tompkins and Schulyer counties. When repeated calls for
manpower were sent out we contacted dispatch to let them know we had manpower and
eqruipment availrable. We sent 10 firefighters arnd equipment to Newfield for the call.
Our crews were on scene for four hours and were fighting fire the entire time. On April
9th at 0312 hourrs we were dispatched to BOCES on Warren Road for an open line 911
call. We responrled to the scene of the call with 8 firefighters. Upon our arrival we were
unable to determine which phone in their trunked system had made the call and that the
custodian on duty had all of the building alarms shut down because he was moving from
building to builcling doing work. This required ihat the crews inspect every area in the
BOCES comple>l to ensure that this was a system malfunction and not a person in distress
in one of the buiildings. After an hour we were able to determine it wis a malfunction.
On April 19th a person riding a skateboard on Hanshaw Road was struck by a vehicle.
Du.e to the mechanism of injury and patients condition the determination was made to
medevac the patient by helicopter to SIINY Upstate Medical Center. Luckily the patient
was not seriousl'y injured and was treated and released from the hospital. It was a very
busy month but all calls were handled.
Our training cal:ndar continues to be full. In April we had many fantastic trainings.
Early in the month we had our forcible entry training with Lt. Tomasulo. He spent long
hours combing vacant buildings and junk piles to come up with almost every type ol
locking mechanism we are likely to run into for th s training. He did a fine job. We also
did a radio refresher training for our members. T re county is getting ready to change the
radio programming template for fire departments and we used this training to come up
with possible programming options for our equipment. Late in the month we spent an
evening at the burn tower going through live fire bvolutions. This was a great chance to
driXl with live firr:. We placed all of our new officars in command positiorri to
"nsure
that
they were up to speed and we were very pleased with the results. We made the scenarios
as realistic as we could and our firefighters perfoqmed extremely well. We had an EMS
training that focused on hemmorage control and fracture management. This class was
taught by EMS Director Adam Breslin. Many members got the chance to be bandaged
and immobilized. We held a joint FAST trainiing with the Lansing Fire Depanment.
They are trying to get a FAST program up and running and asked foiour assistance andexpertise. Both departments traded ideas and proved again that we work very well
together.
A group of firefiighters and EMTs went to Dewitt Middle School in April 30th and worked
with the teens there promoting the opportunities that the fire department offers. We are
looking forward to our Annual Yard Sale coming up the weekend of April 22"d and.23'd.'Ihis is agreatcommunity event.
We placed the order for our SCBA compressor in April and expect delivery before the
end of May. We are planning on placing the compressor in our firematics ioom off the
truck bays' Thisr is one of our storage areas but the compressor will fit nicely in the room.
We were pleased that is would fit in this room as the only other place to putit would have
been in the tool room which would have been problematic from a cleaniiness standpoint.
We had Pleasant Valley Electric come in anilinstall the 3 phase electrical hookup and
emergency power disconnect at the end of April. We are currently working on the spec
fbr the fire truck we hope to purchase. We are scheduling in appaiatus u.rr-do6 to come
and show us their products. We are pleased with the ptogt.s of this project and look
forward to releasing the spec in late May or earfy June. W. *e pretty huppy with the
progression of these projects and are truly thankful to the board for supporting the
department.
As of May l't we have an open bunker room. Matt MacDougal, a long time bunker, has
decided to move out of the station. He will still be an active member but feels it is time
to move on. We have several candidates for the open room and will make our decision at
the May 1lth Fir:e Council Meeting. All of our pvinter recruits class members are very
near completion of their probationary checklists at this time. They are all planning tl
take the Firefighler I class in the fall. We currently have two memb.tr .nroll"d in the
spring Firefighter 1 class. They are doing very well and are looking forward to
completing the class the second week in May.
We are doing w:ll at the fire station. Calls are being covered quickly and all members
seem to be doing well.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
