Dear Mayor Supron and Village Trustees,
I am writing for myself and my husband Don Campbell abput the current discussions concerning fence
laws in Cayuga Heights. We believe that allowing villagers to build temporary deer fences up to 8 feet
high at property lines, but only for five years, is not a sensible idea. lt will only create a bigger problem
to deal with later: ther 50 permanent fences that don't colnply will be illegal again plus there will be
many more "temporary" fences that people will be loathe to remove. We're also concerned about what
these "temporary fences" would look like.
Our biggest objection, however, is that this kind of policy will create another problem: the deer will be
crowded into other unfenced areas including private yards, school yards and public areas. Allowing taller
fences may resolve thre conflicts some villagers have with deer but it will only create larger deer-people
conflicts for those who choose not to or can't afford to fence not to mention that it will lead to new
conflicts between neighbors.
Please think about this carefully. At the moment a vocal minority is pushing for taller fences, but a
couple of years ago there was overwhelming opposition tp this at a public meeting. The majority of
people I speak to don't want taller fences but I think thei4 voices are not being heard currently because
they'rc' not aware of the push by the pro-fence people.
Please don't make thr-. mistake of allowing taller "temp orbry " fences. Enforce the laws on the books
and move ahead with reducing the deer population.
Thank you,
Anita Watkins and Don Campbell
