Honorable Kate Supron
Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report--June, 2010
We were pretty steady in June with al total of 44 Galls. There were 19 calls in the Village
of Cayuga Heights, 24 calls in the Town of Ithaca and 1 mutual aid request. We had 25
EMS runs and 19 fire runs. We had an increasei in the number of calls in the Town of
Ithaca this past month. We attribute this to the (large number of calls to the Northeast
Elementary School. For several days in June they, had a problem with their alarm system
causing multiple alarm activations. It was finally; tracked down to a faulty heat detector
head by the alarm company.
Training slowed down in June. We did Road Rally training in June. Road Rally consists
of the three heavy trucks filled with firefighters)doing a "scavenger hunt" through the
district. Everybody takes turns filling the driver and officer roles. We have ten locations
throughout the district that the crews have to find and then perform firefighting skills at
each station. Every truck must obey all traffic laws and each team needs to perform the
skills correctly to be able clear the station. The simple rule is that first team back to the
station with all tasks complete is the winner. This is a fun training that reinforces skills
and promotes team work. The schedule came out for the Fall Firefighter 1 class in June.
Most of the members of the spring recruit class i,are enrolled in the class. They are all
excited about taking the class because many of them have started their interior checklists
and need the class to get promoted.
The SCBA compressor was delivered at the end of June. It is fully installed and we will
receive training on the unit in early July. It is an amazing piece of equipment and we are
extremely pleased to be putting it in service. We placed the order for the attack and
supply fire hose and a ventilation fan that was 1 discussed at the June Board Meeting.
Several fire truck vendors have visited the station to look over E202 and take photos of
the truck in preparation for submitting bids from the spec. Bid opening is August 3ra
Bids will presented to the Board at the August meeting. We went to the New York
States Fire Chiefs Show in Verona o June 11 thand spoke with all the truck vendors who
were there. We sent bids to sever, vendors who requested copies. The fire station
parking lot will be sealed and striped in early July. All of the heavy trucks will be going
out for pump test in July. We take the trucks to Horseheads and Tyler Fire Service does
the required annual testing and servi e on the truck pumps. All of our fire hose will also
be tested on July 23ra at the station.
We are gearing up for our fall recruit program. L',t Dave Openshaw has compiled a list of
people who have expressed interest in joining tl'e fire department. We will be sending
out email reminders to those who have contacted us. As students come back in late
August we will be actively recruiting on campus for potential members. We are planning
on the fall recruit class to start in mid September.
We will have two open bunker rooms in mid July. We have two very strong candidates
who have applied for these open rooms at the time of this report. Fire Council will
discuss the eligible candidates at our July meeting and fill the rooms. Our summer
bunkers are doing a great job. Every year we have students who decide to stay in Ithaca
for the summer. These members are allowed to move into the overnight rooms at the
station and act as "summer bunkers". This ensures that they have housing and allows us
to have reliable coverage over the summer. All three of these members are EMTs.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent
