Village of Cayuga Heights
Monthly Report—December, 2009
We closed out 2009 with 35 runs in December. This brought our year end total to 517
calls in 2009. We were down 27 calls from last year but it did not seem like it. For
December there were 23 EMS calls and 12 fire runs. We had 18 incidents in the Village
of Cayuga Heights, 14 incidents in t e Town of Ithaca and we were requested mutual aid
3 times. It was a pretty routine month of calls for the department. Even though many of
our members were away for the holidays we covered all of our calls.
Our training program slowed downn December due to the holidays and the long Cornell
break but we are ramping up for the spring training schedule which is usually very hectic.
In late January we are doing ourl department mandatory OSHA and Blood Bourne
Pathogens training and CPR recerfification. In. February we are holding an EVOC
(Emergency Vehicle Operators Co rse) at the station. Many of the state fire training
classes require EVOC as a prerequisite so we try to do one of these sessions every couple
of years. All members are encouraIged to attend the class. We have our spring recruit
class starting up in February as weld. We are going through the final push to get our fall
recruit class members through thei probationary checklists prior to the February Fire
Council Meeting which is the deadline for completion of this work. We will continue to
hold our weekly fire and EMS train gs as well.
Lt David Openshaw has prepared aiFire Safety Program for High Occupancy Buildings
like fraternities and sororities. Fire safety in this type of building has been of concern
locally and nationally for many yeas. We have contacted Cornell University expressing
our desire to present this program in January after Rush Week. We will also contact
Environmental Health and Safety at'Cornell in hopes that we can present this program to
the RAs and students in the dormitories as well.
We are planning a busy spring and we hope the weather warms up soon. All the trucks
are running well and everything at the station seems to be in working order.
Sincerely,
George Tamborelle
