Dear Kate and Village Trustees,
We also share the views expressed below. The argument for culling the Village deer population
is neither persuasive nor cost-effective. Deer from the surrounding area will only replace those
culled at considerable expense to the taxpayer and residents of the Village.
Research suggests that the "net-and-bolt" method causes unnecessary suffering in wild animals
who will be active and struggling at the time of shooting.
Moreover,clearly deer are driven in greater numbers into Cayuga Heights as wooded areas have
been disappearing in the face of the type of development we have seen in the Sapsucker Woods
area. We need to have more discussion of the broader context surrounding the increase of the
deer population.
As a social scientist, Victor nee finds it tempting to write an article about a Village that spends
a considerable sum of taxpayers' money to hire professionals to kill deer with the so-called "net-
and-bolt" method. A detailed investigation of the role of a small, motivated group, its disregard
for village opinion, a careful account of the method of killing, and the lack of visible results
would make a worthy project for social journalism of general interest beyond the Village of
Cayuga Heights.

Warshawsky. It expresses the common sense many of us share. You are
obdurately pursuing a plan that is very costly, will not work. and will cause
suffering to animals and dismay to those who find the plan senseless and callous.
Cayuga Heights is not a bounded ecosystem like the Galapagos Islands. Trapping
in nets one or more terrified deer and shooting bolts at them is not in the
least "normal" slaughterhouse procedure. And the entire PR campaign has been
characterized by the use of obfuscating euphemisms. Please reconsider what you
are doing and go in the direction of what would indeed be a project
of"remediation," including the remediation of tense hostile feelings in the village.
