HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Department Monthly Report- July 2010.PDFAtrgust 9,2010 Honorable Kate Supron Board of Trusteers Village of Cayuga Heights Monthly Report - July, 2010 July was an extremely busy month for the departrpent with 51 calls. There were 30 callsin the Village of Cayuga Heights, 1! in the Tornfn of Ithaca and 2 mutual aid requests. We had 27 EMfi calls and 24 fire calls. For as busy a month as it was the calls were routine for the department. In the middle of the rhonth we were dispatched to two motor vehicle accidents within 24 hours of each other to the same spot on Fleasant Grove Road. Both times vehicles struck the same qower pole. Both times the pole had to be replaced. Luokily there were no injuries on either one of the calls. As busy as we were, we were able to cover all the calls with during {he month. July trainings wtdi attended for sumlner time trainings. We did training on standpipes and sprinklers at the beginning of th{ month at the burn tower. On the 12th of July we had an in servir;e on the new SC$A compressor that 31 members attended. The compressor is now in service. We hld a joint training with Lansing late in the month. We did a walk through of the Borg \larner facility on Warren Road. We are the primary mutual aid department to the facility and were pleased to have the opportunity to walk through the plant in a non emergeni setting. Opr final training of ihe month was an overview of our IFAST equipment. Af this training we pulled all the FAST hardware and ropes off the truck to inspect it, clean Jt, and ensure everything is in working order. We took delivery of two AED units irl July for the fire trucks. At this time we have AED units on R241 and all of the heavy trucks. These units were purchased by the fire connpany and the fire council with donated funds from the company and,2Yo money from fire council. We felt that all of the heavy trucks should have AED units on them for the safilty of our firefighters on scenes. The leading cause of firefighter death is sudden cardiac arrest at emergency scenes. NFPA has recently stated that in the near future they willrequire all new apparatus to be eqfripped with 2{ED units. Fire council has set the dates for thd fall recruit drive and classes. We will actively recruit for new members through mid September and then hold the first recruit class in early October. We felt this time lind would allow us to recruit the incoming freshman class at Cornell rl little more heavily and get into the fraternities and sororities during early September. In the past we recrfrited in late August. Students don't seem to settle into campus life and look at extraculpicular activities until early September. We hope this will allow us to draw in more meinbers. We have determined that we need a decent lid openingforE202 is on August 3'd 9"'board meeting. have these two members as bunkers. Sincerely, George Tamborelle Fire Chief/Fire Superintendent sized class this fall to fiIl our ranks. Our spring rqcruits did very well and are all planning on taking the Firefighter 1 class this fall. Recruitfing and training is a continuous process with this department. I will p resent the bids to the Board at the August We had two openings in the bunker areathat fire council filled at our July meeting. Our new bunkers are FF Matt Morgan and FF JohnrPaul Couce. Matt was a member for several years while an undergrad at Cornell. Hg went to Veterinary School out of the arca and is now back at Cornell to fir1ish his degrqe. John-Paul is a sophomore at Cornell and has been one of our most active grembers fo1 the past year.
