Members of the Board of Trustees
Village of Cayuga Heights
I hereby submit the annual report oli activities of the Cayuga Heights Police Department
for the year ending 2008.
I am happy to report that we have not had any personnel changes within the ranks of the
full time police staff for the 2008 year. We have experienced some changes amongst the
part-time staff but the main core of the part-time staff has remained in tack for another
year making them a very reliable and important part of our department.
The 2008 year has brought many new changes and challenges. The year started with a
big change in the leadership of the'Village with a new Mayor and three new Trustees. It
has been a privilege to get to know each and everyone of them and to work diligently at
bringing them up to speed on the daily workings of both the Village and the Cayuga
Heights Police Department. A huger and tragic change was the passing away of Trustee
Ann Antil. Ann was such a vibrant, cheery, witty, presence at monthly board meetings.
Ann was the type of person that cor.rld tackle avery tough (Board of Trustee) issue with
vigor and still show that she had a heart. Ann's passing has left areal void in the hearts
of all the people that had the great pleasure of working with her and especially for those
of us that were privileged to call her our friend. Another change that was implemented in
2008 was the Tompkins County Emergency Responder Agencies radio system. Every
emergency agency within Tompkins County made the radio change over to the 800MHZ
radio system. The new radio system has proven to be a great improvement to our ability
to communicate and serve our com.munities. The new Tracs system (computer system in
the patrol vehicles) has greatly improved our efficiency in ticket writing and motor
vehicle accident reporting. Probablly one of the biggest challenges would have to be the
resurrection of the deer committee, of which I have been a part. The committee has spent
countless hours researching and evaluating the possible methods of reducing the deer
population in the Village of Cayuga Heights. The deer committee meetings were opened
to the public and we have had some great discussions with everyone who has attended the
meeting. The controversy over what to do with the deer is a very emotionally charged
issue for people on both sides of th,s issue. It would be my hope that the deer committee
would be able to bring a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on the possible ways
to deal with the deer issue in 2009.
