=' McKeel House: 1876 Trumansburg Rd., Jacksonville, NY
11. The originni house appears to have been L -shape with the
main beady of the structure perpendicular to the road and
the side wing running parallel to the road. There have
been one --story additions to the west facade totaling approx-
imately 600 sq.ft. The additions appear to have been built
in two phases. One addition is capped with a low --pitched
gable roof covered with asphalt shingles. The windows on
the south facade are three over one double -hung sash.
The othsr addition is capped by a shed roof. I believe
these two additions were made during the 20th --century.
Neither addition displays the Greek revival details that
the original L --shape house has.
18. The Ne€:eel house faces Route 96 at the intersection of Swamp
College dose on the northside. The house is one-nnd--a-hclf
stories tall. The original structure sets on F stone founda-
tion %_'n' is sided with csbestos shingles. T€ s kouse seems
to 4s:ve boEn constructed in two ph:-,sas.
The original body consists of a L -shape plan ind is capped
with two asphalt shingled medium pitched gable roofs. The
main body is perpendicular to Route 96, with the wing parallel
to Rcute 96. The gable ends have plain returns and the eaves
support e plain wood frieze. The main facade is three bays
''aide with the entranco located on the left side. The wooden
front door is a single paneled glazed opening. The entrance
is topped by an entablature with flanking pilcsters made
of wood. The first floor windows are three -over -one double -
hung sashes surrounded by plain wooden moldings. The second
floor windows on the gable end ore six -aver -six double -hung
sashes. There is an exterior concrete block chimney located
an the north facade. The princip l addition is one-znd-c-
Ulf stories tc1l :pith L gable roof. There is a small lantern
on top of the gable roof. The windows are three -over -one
Jouole--rung scshes except Ar one obvious reol'acenent in the
south facade. There is also a cane-stcry addition with a
shed roof on the west facade.
20. This house :drys on Wpor tint role in the Jevelopment of
Jeckw«nville. Its first owner recorded in 1853 and 1866, was
Cyrus H. Bowe. Born December lc, 1805 in Fishkill, Jutchess
County, PAY, Howe grew up attanding school in winter and
working summers until at the age of eighteen he commenced
teaching school. In 1827 "owe worried hissNpry Farrington
and the couple moved to Tompkins CcunQ and settled in Jack--
sanville. Once more he taught school winters and farmed
suis, exs. In 1840, he wss appointed ostiaster of Jacksonville
and he performed this service for a decade before founding
a produce brokerage business which he conducted until suffer-
ing a fatel stroke July 3, 1671.
The house is currently owned by Jesse KeKcel. The i- e€:eels
havo been prominate in the area's Arming and business activi-
ties dating back to their original Quaker ancestors. The
Creamery, though not extant, was one of the main businesses
owned by the McKeels in Jacksonville.
