?R. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE:
The Kovencamp house is one of two I' .lunate vilIGs �n Jacksonville,
A date of 1287 is cLrvej in t4e tower, and handwritten dates in the
basement record late 19th -century hDrvests. Lewis H. Culver, first
deed holder of record w_:s horn in =overt, Seneca County, Aujust,13,
1608. He come to Ha-lseyville, in Llysses, at the acre of seventeen
to learn the trades of __ &qnsr _.nd currier. In Suptember of 1830,
he moved to Ithaca nd founaad a grocery business which quickly
grew anJ prospered. Ponsibly as L result of this success, he
purchased the Jacksonville prep€arty as an investment and finally
sold the Mace to Levi icucrer (larch 26, 1.653.

Havencamp -douse: 661 Jacksonville road, Jacksonville, New York
18. This two--=and-c--half story houses has an irregular plan with
a tower defining the. entrEnce. The entrance is equally Civided
by two single paneled woolen doors surrounded by flat wood mold-
ings. The ori gins l pert of the louse sets on e stone foundation.
The: house is covered with wooden clapboard jading. The original
p6rt of the structure is capped with three steeply pitched gable
roofs (covered with asphalt shingles) with large overhangs sup --
ported '_:y Jelicate.l.y carved brackets. The tower is capped with
a shallow bell shcped flet roof which is Elso supported by car-
ved woojen brackets. The Cower rcpurtaJly has the gate of 1887
carved on its interior.
All of th- ;orches except the front porch were added in 1926
by Kenneth Hovencamp. He also cdded (at the sLme time) a two--
story addition with C f1st roof on tho �orth focede. A one-Fnd-

openings seem to be unique to the vier.
There is c one-story projecting 'Wy w nwow with L wooden
paneled base and chres two -over -two ,;rouble -hung sash windows.
There are _'ecorative elements on the gable ends such as a cir-
cular window with carved rip noldings on the nest facade, and
a carved relief diamond shone ornament on the south facede.
Thera are three - brick chimneys: one centrF ly located on the
