Narrative '
The residence at 5011 Jacksonville Road (formerly 619 Jacksonville Road due to
address alterations post -1983) is an excellent local example of the Greek Revival style,
constructed ca. 1840. A one -and -a -half story, gable -end structure has its main facade
along Jacksonville Road. Square pilasters decorate the corners of the structure along the
gable end, appearing to support a wide entablature exclusively used on the gable -end. By
comparison the south facade is simple and unadorned.
The main facade entrance is to the north of two windows with double -hung sash
in a 6/1 light configuration. The top of the surround projects outwards. The two windows
on the second story of the main facade reflect the same configuration. The double -doors
are flanked by two thin pilasters who have two bands of wood angled to a point in the
middle of each pilaster to simulate fluting. They support a wide freeze and heavy,
projecting entablature. A small casement window is cut into the foundation to the right of
the entrance.
The one-story porch attached to the north end of the main is supported by posts. A
central door is flanked by two double -hung windows with 1/1 lights. The low pitched
porch roof also has a heavy frieze board underneath and forma s pediment on the north
side before it rejoins the west wall.
The north side of the house ahs four double -hung windows with 6/1 lights and a
heavy frieze board underneath the eave of the roof/ At the west end of the north size there
are two pilasters' one facing west and one north. On the upper story of the larger section
not covered by the one-story section to the north are two frieze windows which are
boarded over. On the upper level of the east end of the one-story section is a boarded over
window; below is a modern replacement window.
The one-story addition on the east fagade was added in the ca. 1955. The addition
has a concrete foundation and one rectangular, horizontal casement window. A smaller
one-story addition is also connected to the north fagade of the main block. It's low

pitched, seemed metal roof is supported by one round column. A sun porch was added to
the east end
The first floor of the south fagade has three windows with double -hung sash and a
6/1 light configuration. The second floor is articulated by the presence of three altered
frieze windows, which extend beyond the frieze band. The cellar is also found on the east
end of the south fagade. A mid -201h century two -car garage is located on the southwest
corner of the yard, and has a concrete foundation and pressboard walls as of 1983.
Since the property was surveyed in 1983, the primary change has been the
replacement of some of the historic windows. The rest of the structure appears to be
virtually unchanged per the view from Jacksonville Road.
Narrative Description of Significance
The first visual record of the property is the map of Jacksonville, found in the
1853 source Map of Tompkins County (1853). The exact date of the house is unknown,
but the heavy cornice and its distance from the center of Jacksonville suggests that it was
constructed a little after the first wave of Greek Revival structures in the hamlet, perhaps
ca. 1940.
The deed on the property was untraceable before 1959. Della M. Gillespie's
(1879-1959) occupation was listed as dress making in the 1900 US Census and as a
Surrogate Court Clerk engaged in probate work in the 1930 US Census. In 1930, she
lived with her brother, Lyman, and mother, Mary, on the Falls Street north of
Jacksonville. At some subsequent point, she purchased 5011 Jacksonville Road and Ruth
K. Johnson purchased it from her estate after her death in 1959. Margaret Miller acquired
it in 1972, selling it two years later to Richard and Linda McKeel. In 1979, the McKeels
sold the house to the Kents in 1979.
