Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 5065 Jacksonville Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses) Narrative Description of Property The vernacular one -and -a -half story residential building is situated on the southwestern corner of Jacksonville Road and a private lane that leads to the Jacksonville Community Church. It has simplified Greek Revival style details. The side -gabled main block has a frieze underneath the eaves of the roof and has slight returns on each of the gable ends. The stone foundation has been coated in cement, but the stone foundation is visible in areas where the cement failed. Heavy exposed beams, visible in the storeroom during the 1983 historic survey, indicated that the frame is joined mortise and tenon construction. Interior walls were covered in plaster and lathe at the time of the survey, but their current condition is unknown. The main entrance on the Jacksonville (east), four -bay fagade is slightly off -center towards the north. The small porch light above it has faceted sides of opaque purple glass. The front stoop is a large slate slab that has split since the 1983 survey, supported by squared stones. Two first -story windows are situated to the north of the main entrance, and one is to the south. Each window has double -hung wood sash with 6/1 lights. Both the door and windows have pain surrounds. At the basement level, two small rectangular casement windows flank the entrance. There are no windows on the second story on this eastern facade. The original wood clapboard is still exposed, and the corners of the building are covered by thin corner boards. A wooden watershed about six inches wide encircles the house right above the foundation and below the clapboard siding. The south gable end of the first story has another entrance flanked by two windows, identical in configuration to those on the main (east) facade. This entrance has a smaller slate stoop. There are two windows on the upper story, also with 6/1 lights. Compiled by Katelin Olson, August 15, 2014 N.Y. Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 5065 Jacksonville Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses) Narrative Description of Property (continued) The fenestration on the north gable follows the matter of the other windows. There are three windows on the first story; two are the same size as those on the main facade, the other one is smaller. All have 6/1 lights. The fenestration on the second story is identical to the south gable end. The rectangular storeroom attached to the west fagade was likely an early addition to the main block because the clapboard joining the two parts are not contiguous. The 1983 survey indicates that an internal step existed to connect the lower storeroom with the kitchen in the main part of the house. This may indicate that the storeroom lacks a basement/crawl space that would be expected in finished space. Attached to the storeroom is an open flagstone porch that a previous owner, William Henry Housworth, built ca. 1978. An entrance connects the porch to the storeroom. The house appears to be essentially unchanged since the 1983 historical survey. The main block is approximately a square, while the inclusion of the storeroom addition gives the property a L-shaped configuration. In fair condition, shifts in the millwork on the north facade of the storeroom addition suggest possible settling. This is the only surviving member of what was essentially a trio of small houses; the other two were late 19th/early 20th century bungalows on the east side of Jacksonville Road that are no longer extant. An additional known alteration is the removal of a brick chimney from the south gable William Henry Housworth ca. 1965. Narrative Description of Significance A definitive date of construction could not be determined for this property. The Tompkins County Real Property Image Mate database lists the property as dating to 1870, which may be accurate given the deed research. A previous survey thought it may be the "Old Lockwood House" listed on Cold Springs Road 1, based on a description. The vernacular appearance, lack of windows on the fagade's upper floor, and location are all suggestive of this possibility. However, this is only a possibility. In 1864, Nelson and Sarah Ayres bought the property where the house is now situated from William and Angeline Plough. The acreage consisted of 49.5 acres. They also bought another parcel of 57 acres. Persons associated with the property: • Nelson Ayres (1824-1917) - In 1863, one year before purchasing the property, Ayres, then 39, was listed in the "consolidated list of all persons of Class II, subject to do military duty in the Twenty Sixth Congressional District," then including Schuyler and Tompkins County. He was a farmer, married to Sarah Ayres, who moved to Steuben County after selling the property in 1867. Compiled by Katelin Olson, August 15, 2014 2 N.Y. Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 5065 Jacksonville Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses) Narrative Description of Significance (continued) William (born c. 1824) and Sarah (born c. 1834) Plough - William, of Jacksonville, enlisted in Company G, New York 109th Infantry regiment on August 12, 1862 and was promoted to Full 1St Sergeant. He promoted to Full 1St Lieutenant on December 29, 1864. He was subsequently promoted to Full 2" d Lieutenant eight days later, on January 6, 1865. He was wounded during the war but survived his injuries and was mustered out on June 4, 1865 at Delaney House in Washington, D.C. He was married to Sarah, and the son of Isaac (a farmer) and Mary Plough. William was listed as a Teamster in the 1875 NY Census. The house, presumably 5065 Jacksonville Road, was noted as framed and valued at $700. William (born c. 1824) and Theodesia (born c. 1826) Vandine - William and Theodesia were the son and daughter of Edward and Phoebe Vandine, originally of Maine, as recorded in the 1860 U.S. Census. Edward was listed as an "egg dealer." Theodesia was 78 at the time of the 1915 NY Census, and appears to have remained a spinster. She's noted as living on Falls Road. 5065 Jacksonville may have been an investment/rental property with her brother William, given her age. It seems quite likely that Bertie Moss inherited the property, subsequently selling it to William Allen. • William Allen (owner 1956-1964) - Harland Knight told previous surveyors that Allen was a blacksmith in the early and mid -20th century. It also seems that Allen was related in some way to Imogene Housworth (owner 1964-2008). Warren G. and Charlotte Farrington - Warren was a prosperous businessman in the egg business and other enterprises. It is likely that he rented out this property, as he constructed a large brick Italianate home at 1843 Trumansburg Road.
