Narrative Description of Property 8\\ Ar
The two-story, rectangular main block of the residence at 1875 Trumansburg
Road/Route 96 is situated on the northeast side of the road, immediate adjacent to the
Jacksonville Community Church. The parcel is approximate 4.3 acres near the center of
the present hamlet, on what was likely the northern end of the community when it was
constructed in c. 1820. The house retains its original clapboard and was constructed over
a stone foundation.
The three -bay, slightly asymmetrical street (southwest) facade has five double -
hung wood window sash with 12/12 lights and a main entrance on the northwest bay.
Slender pilasters flank either side of the arched semi -circular door surround an inset
fanlight with radiating iron bars. These are quintessential Federal style details.
A two-story wing projects towards to east/northeast from the rear (northeastern) wall.
Narrow louvered shutters referenced in the 1983 survey are no longer evident.
The 1983 survey referenced a southern Greek Revival style porch on the
southeastern fagade that could not be verified given the dense vegetation on the property.
Details previously noted included a substantial entablature supported by thick wood
posted and matched board siding beneath a porch roof pieced by frieze windows. A
glassed -in porch on the rear of the building could not be ascertained either.
A 23ft. by 16ft. addition projects from the northwestern facade. This was likely
added in the mid -20th century. The addition was constructed over a concrete foundation
and is also sheathed in clapboard.
Narrative Description of Significance
The Federal style details indicate that this is one of the oldest residences still
extant in the hamlet. It was constructed by Jeremiah Cooper, one of Jacksonville's
earliest settlers. Born ca. 1791, Jeremiah accompanied his grandfather, Thomas Cooper,

to Ulysses in 1799. Interviewed in 1881, he remembered the "long and hard march of
four weeks from Connecticut with an ox team, through a pathless wilderness, their route
marked by hacked trees." The two pioneers were eventually joined by Jeremiah's father
and the remainder of the Cooper family. Thomas Cooper built the Cooper Tavern, located
on the southwestern side of Trumansburg Road, at 1872 Trumansburg Road/Route 96.
By 1800, an initial clearing was hacked out of the site that served as Cooper's
home and farm for the following eight and a half decades. At 19, he volunteered and
served as a Captain in the War of 1812. His first marriage, to Harriet Smith, ended with
her death in 1826. He remarried the following year and eventually had a total of ten
children.
Edgar Howe (born 1870) and Anna (Riddle) Farrington purchased the property
from Jeremiah Cooper's estate in 1894. Edgar was the son of Warren G. and Charlotte
Farrington of 1843 Trumansburg Road. (See Historic Resource Inventory Form for 1843
Trumansburg Road for more information.) Edgar and Anna had three children, Hazel,
Victor and Cecil. (Somewhat oddly, Edgar, Anna and Victor all died in 1930.)
