Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 1868 Trumansburg Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses) Narrative Description of Property The one -and -a -half story side -gabled residence at 1868 Trumansburg Road is a Greek Revival style origins. The building is on the southwestern side of Trumansburg Road/Route 98. The exterior of the house is finished with clapboard, with thin wooden corner boards defining the edges of the house. A wide entablature runs under the eaves of the roof and culminates in a plain return on the gable ends. Most of the windows have replacement sash, and come in a variety of sizes. The alteration of the windows on the main (northeastern) fagade may have produced the asymmetrical fagade. Unusually for the style, the windows and door openings on the main (east) fagade are not arranged symmetrically. Originally constructed on top of a stone foundation, it was raised during the 1960s for the construction of a concrete half basement. The concrete landing and steps on the north facade were likely added at that time. Since the 1983 survey, the building has experienced several small, but cumulatively substantive, alterations. The porch landing and steps of poured concrete have been retained, but the support structure has been replaced with mass-produced pressure -treated lumber. Lattice work covers the underside of the porch and serves as the balustrade, constructed of the same style of press -treated lumber. The most disharmonious element is the addition of an aluminum hood over the main (northeastern) entrance, and it is not in keeping with the aesthetics of the Greek Revival style. Narrative Description of Significance This residence has been identified as one of the original houses in the immediate hamlet of Jacksonville. The 1853 Atlas Man indicates Catherine Teater acquired the house for $350. The exact date of construction is unknown, and general estimates put it between 1820 and 1845.
