Address: 1867 Trumansburg Road
Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses)
Narrative Description of Property
The house has undergone considerable modification since the 1983 historical
survey, and lacks the majority of the character -defining features of a traditional Greek
Revival style house. The main block of the house is two and one-half stories high with a
roof ridge that parallels Route 96/Trumansburg Road and a pedimented cross gable on
the main (southwestern) fagade. Two other rectangular sections, each approximately
twelve feet wide, continue one after another from the rear (northeastern) exterior walls.
Interestingly, the main entrance is located on the northwestern fagade. The brick chimney
extant in 1983 has been removed.
With the exception of the massing of the main block, all of the other Greek
Revival style details have been removed and/or covered by vinyl that was added since
1983. The structure has asphalt single roof and yellow vinyl siding with white vinyl trim
boards. All visible windows are vinyl replacement sash with 1/1 lights. Pressure -treated
decking extends along the south facade, and a wood privacy fence runs along south of the
house, parallel to Route 96/Trumansburg Road.
Additional changes noted in the 1983 survey include:
1. A one-story addition to the south side of the east wall, and a shed attached to the
south wall of the addition.
2. The addition of a glassed -in porch on the north side of the east wall.
3. The addition of a porch on the north wall of the northwest portion enclosed.
4. The replacement of numerous original sash and doors and the addition of a large
picture window on the south end of the west fagade.
The building is in good functional condition, but retains essentially no historical
integrity. In the front year, gardens noted in the 1983 survey have been replaced with
hardscape and it is clear that the property lost landscape as a result of the 1950s road
widening. The Jacksonville Community Church is immediately adjacent to the southeast.

Narrative Description of Significance
Little is known about the house. 1867 is one of the original houses in the hamlet
to appear on the 1853 map of Tompkins County, and was likely constructed ca. 1840. At
the time of the 1983 survey, the property was owned by Mrs. Ruth Teeter Row, who
previously operated an antique shop out of the building. It was constructed originally as a
single-family residence and is currently in use as such.
