Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses)
Narrative Description of Property
Originally, 1866 Trumansburg Road/Route 96 was a rectangular, two-story side -
gable block with returns. Aside from the form, massing and scale of the building, the
majority of Greek Revival style details expected have been lost or covered during 20th
century alterations.
The main (northeastern) facade is divided into four bays with the main entrance
offset to the south. A one-story porch with a shed roof covers the central two bays. The
porch is supported by wooded posts. Once clad with wood clapboard, the building is now
sided in aluminum siding and the roofs of the main block and addition are sheathed in
asphalt shingles. The expected entablature has either been removed or covered. The
visible windows on the main (northeastern) fagade are double -hung wood sash with 2/2
lights.
The extensive alterations include a one-story 20th century addition to the rear
(southwestern) facade with gabled roof. Is has a moderate pitch gabled roof and a
concrete foundation.
Adjacent to the house to the north is a small, single car, gable end garage, likely
constructed ca. 1915. The original paired wooden doors are extant and the wood siding is
intact. The entire small structure appears to be in its original condition and indicative of
early automobile influences in Jacksonville.
The residence is surrounded by other contemporaneous homes. It clearly lost part
of its yard with the expansion of Route 96 during the 1950s. Currently the yard is filled
with dense vegetation.
