The one -and -a -half story, side -gable eastern portion was the original block of the property, constructed in the Greek Revival style. The porch runs the length of this porch on the main (southwestern) facade. The shed roof of the porch is supported by two posts and one engaged pier over a stone foundation. Above the porch roof, a wide frieze is pierced with two frieze windows that retain three fixed lights. The frieze continues around to the southeast fagade, terminating in simple returns. A painted brick chimney bisects this fagade. The fagade is sheathed with clapboard. The windows throughout the various facades are largely replacement sash with 1/1 lights, with the exception of the frieze windows. The doors also appear to be replacement. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles. The northwestern two-story addition is far simpler and vernacular in its configuration and aesthetic detailing. The end -gable, two-story, two -bay addition is attached to the northwest fagade of the original block. Its stone foundation suggests that the addition was constructed in the 19th century, likely c. 1880. The main block also has a one-story addition to the northeast with a deck attached on the southeast facade. The house retains the features and configuration as described on the 1983 survey. The main visible exterior alteration is the replacement of the porch floor and steps of the main fagade. A new balustrade supports the posts on the exterior, extending the porch closer to the road. The porch floor, balustrade, railing, and additional supports are constructed of stained pressure -treated lumber than sharply contrasts with the white clapboard of the house. Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 1865 Trumansburg Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses) Narrative Description of Property (continued) A simple gable -end single -car garage (c. 1920) is at the rear of the property, and is similar to other houses in the hamlet, including 1866 Trumansburg Road. The centered door and window are replacements. A stream runs west to east along the western property line. The property is separated from the adjacent property to the southwest by a line of maple trees. The property is currently used as a residence, as well as housing Sassy Dog Grooming. Narrative Description of Significance The house was constructed during Jacksonville's period of prosperity in the early/mid-19th century. It first appears on the Map of Tompkins County (1853) and is similar in style and form to the other Greek Revival -style homes in the neighborhood.
