Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 1862 Trumansburg Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses) Narrative Description of Property Unlike the majority of early residences in Trumansburg that were constructed in the Greek Revival style, 1862 Trumansburg Road (constructed c. 1840) retains elements of the earlier Georgian/Federal aesthetic. This residence has lost a great deal of its historical integrity, but the form and massing the house—rectangular, almost square, with a hipped roof—with pilasters on either side of the main (northeast facade) entrance. The ornate hood over the roof was a later addition, likely of the Italianate period (ca. 1860). Given the loss of other identifying features, such as windows, trim, cornice details, and the placement of chimneys, it is difficult to assign the residence a single architecture style. Instead, this may be an example of a vernacular, local design that reflected the outgoing Georgian/Federal styles, with the Italianate hood added at a later date. The main body of the residence is almost a perfect square (25 feet by 31 feet). Later additions on the rear (west) fagade have elongated into an L -shape. The house as a low pitched hipped roof sheathed with asphalt shingles. Originally, the roof was distinguished by a "captain's walk," but was removed by owner James Wilson pre -1983. The house is sided in asphalt shingles and it rests on a stone foundation. An exposed concrete block chimney is on the eastern end of the north fagade. All of the windows on the main (northeastern) and northwestern facade are replacements post -2009. Previous photos from 1983 (survey) and 2009 (Tompkins County Real Property) show a variety of 9/9 light windows with double -hung wood sash on all facades. A small, rectangular one-story porch on the north facade is used as a secondary entrance. A rear (west) one-story addition has a flat roof. Photographs from c. 2009 show it contained double -hung sash with 2/2 light windows, suggesting that it was a 19th century addition. A long, narrow garage dating from the 20th century is on the northwestern corner of the property. Compiled by Katelin Olson, August 15, 2014 N.Y.
