Address: 1859 Trumansburg Road (Route 96)
Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville (Ulysses)
Narrative Description of Property
The rectangular building (1966) is one-story and constructed of concrete block
and is located on the northwestern corner of Route 96/Trumansburg Road and
Jacksonville Road. It has a flat roof with a moderate eve protruding over the main
(southeast) fagade. Since the property was surveyed in 1983, small windows have been
added to the east, south and west facades. The distinctive triptych-eque light
configuration around the main entrance on the south (main) fagade provides aesthetic
interest in an otherwise simple building.
An asphalt parking lot fills the space in front of the building, which set in a
prominent spot for oncoming traffic along Trumansburg Road/Route 96. When surveyed
in 1983, it was noted that the size, scale and building materials are out of proportion with
the other buildings in the center of the hamlet. However, with the gas station located on
the southwestern corner of the intersection, the building contributes to the commercial
purpose of this portion of the hamlet.
Narrative Description of Significance
Historically, this intersection has been an important commercial hub for the
hamlet. The deed describes the property as part of the land "known as the old Tavern lot."
Additional research corroborates that the Mattison Tavern (no longer extant) occupied the
site diagonally across Route 96/Trumansburg Road and Jacksonville Road, now occupied
by a gas station.
The centrally located site has served a variety of uses. The 1866 map depicts a
structure fronting Trumansburg Road called the "tin shop." Jacksonville historian Nancy
Dean noted that a bean shelling operation occurred in a house on the property, although
the specific date range (likely late 19th, early 20th century) is unknown. Based on deed
research, it's likely that a gas station and accompanying residence, now demolished, were
constructed ca. 1920. These operations appear to have still been in use when the deed was
transferred in 1938.

Narrative Description of Significance (continued)
Constructed in 1966, the commercial building at 1859 Trumansburg Road
reflects
mid-century investment in the greater area. Trumansburg, for instance, experienced a
major surge of investment in new buildings in the 1950s and early 1960s. The site is
currently used as an acupuncture center.
Interestingly, two of the property's owners, Edwin S. Johnson and Ai Lyon, also
owned 1858 Trumansburg Road at various points.
