A new, early hunting season for antlerless deer begins tomorrow, September 12 through September 20 in
selected Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), including Ulysses.
Hunting is allowed on state lands including TauRhannock Park.
• Only antlerless deer (those without antlers or having antlers less than three inches long) may
be harvested during the early antlerless deer season, and hunters may only use Deer
Management Permits (DMPs) or Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) tags.
• Hunters who report an antlerless deer harvest on a DMP will receive a Bonus DMP for the
same WMU. Hunters who harvest and report an antlerless deer will also receive a second antlered
deer tag for the 2026-27 seasons through DEC's new "Earn-a-2nd-Buck" program.
• Hunters using firearms, including muzzleloaders, during any season must wear a solid or
patterned fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink hat, vest, or jacket while hunting.
• Legal hunting hours for deer and bear include the full period of ambient light from 30 minutes
before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

BIRD MIGRATION:
Shorebirds are already on the move, heading south from their summer breeding grounds in the arctic.
Songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, and more will soon follow, with migration peaking in September -October.
New York State is well positioned along the Atlantic Flyway for fall migration. If you're in upstate New York
and still want to get a glimpse of shorebirds, check out areas with mudflats or low standing water.
Shorebirds often arrive overnight, stopping to briefly refuel before carrying on south. For warblers, vireos,
thrushes, and more, anywhere in New York State can be good for viewing.
Check out DEC Bird Conservation Area Program and the New York State Birding Trail for locations to look
for migrating birds.
View the latest migration forecasts and maps for birds in your area.
