KATELIN OLSON: Greetings, Ulyssians! For roughly 160 years, Americans have gathered on Memorial Day to remember and honor those who paid the ultimate price in service to the United States. In 1971, it became an official federal holiday. The Town annually supports the recognition of soldiers in our cemeteries by the American Legion. Thank you to all of the members who serve or previously served in defense of the United States, and for the families who served along with them. (If you can believe it —and I'm being 100% honest —my grandfather was born in 1896 and served in the Navy in World War I!) It's looking like a very soggy weekend ahead, which could be the perfect opportunity for you to cuddle up with the Town's Comprehensive Plan draft! The Town Board extended the public hearing on the draft until our next meeting on Tuesday, May 26th at 7pm, and your thoughts and opinions are welcomed. Comments can also be sent by 5pm on Tuesday to Carissa at clerk(d)townofulyssesny;gov. The full board packet for the upcoming meeting is available here with both in -person and remote options. As always, our meetings are recorded and posted on YouTube. PUBLIC HEARING ON COMP PLAN EXTENDED TO MAY 26: The Public Hearing opened on Tuesday, May 12,. will remain open through Tuesday, May 26, for the purpose of receiving comments on the draft Comprehensive Plan. The meeting will be held at 10 Elm St., Trumansburg NY 14886. Members of the public may join in person or remotely via Zoom videoconference at https://zoom.us/j/183862745 or+16465588656„183862745#. All interested residents (or their agents/representatives) will be afforded an opportunity to submit written and/or oral comments at that time. This past Monday, a team from Cornell's Proiect GNBee walked the grounds of Trumansburg's Grove Cemetery searching for ground - nesting bee burrows. They found thousands. Large numbers of 10 different bee species (see species list attached) are present in groups scattered throughout the cemetery. Among the most visible is Colletus inequalis, which emerges each year in early spring, and is active above -ground for only a few weeks. Males emerge first to be ready when females become available (to mate), then females dig burrows, lay an egg in each one, and collect pollen and nectar to provision each offspring. Other species emerge at different times throughout the spring, summer and fall — their timing synchronized with flowering times of plants they rely upon. Unlike queen honey bees, who rely upon a whole battalion of worker bees to feed and care for larvae, these solitary bees are single mothers. They do it all. CITIZEN PREPAREDNESS TRAINING: The Citizen Preparedness Corps gives residents the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster or emergency, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre -disaster conditions. Two separate training sessions will be offered: • Wednesday, June 3rd at 6:OOpm at the Brooktondale Community Center, 524 Valley Road, Ithaca NY • Tuesday, June 9th at 6:OOpm at the Museum of the Earth, 1259 Trumansburg Road, Ithaca NY The Citizen Preparedness Corps is led by the New York National Guard working with experts from the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) and is coordinated with local county emergency management personnel. "Especially with severe weather events becoming more frequent and more extreme, it's more important than ever to be prepared and respond accordingly," stated Geoff Dunn, Community Preparedness Coordinator for Tompkins County Emergency Response. "This training program is a great opportunity to learn how to develop family emergency plans and stock up on supplies." Each family that attends will receive one NYS Disaster Preparedness Kit. The training is free of charge, but registration is required at: www.prepare.nygov ARBOR DAY RECAP: The Town of Ulysses Tree Advisory Council gathered in Jacksonville Park on Swamp College Road on April 24 to tend swamp white oaks that were planted on a previous Arbor Day with a grant from the NYS Urban Forestry Council (NYSUFC). According to Ulysses resident and NYSUFC Board Member Andy Hillman, "It was a cleanup Arbor Day, replacing plants that didn't make it. We also planted winterberries for the birds!" "The group augmented a group of winterberries that were planted previously on the first Arbor Day after the start of the Pandemic — that day, we stayed a shovel distance apart and some wore masks outdoors." "This year, the Tree Advisory Council met beforehand to discuss the Town's newly acquired old growth forest remnant, Smith Woods, and our role as stewards of this rare natural resource."
