I am sorry to report that we are in for more extreme weather starting early Saturday morning through early Sunday afternoon. See more below. IN THIS WEEK’S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Update from Supervisor Dangerously Cold Temps Upcoming Meetings State of the Village Immigrants in Our Community Healthy Screen Habits for Youth Food Pantry Open on Monday DMVs Closed Next Fri-Wed. UPDATE FROM SUPERVISOR: Greetings, Ulyssians! This week finds me, and my family, battling a cold IN the cold. I know many others around town are in the same virus-laden boat. Cold comfort, of course! (Ok, I'll cease with my virus-induced puns.) In keeping of warmer thoughts, I bring your attention to the Great Backyard Bird Count, a global event organized by Cornell and the National Audubon Society, is currently underway. Who's making an appearance in your backyard this winter? I have a couple male blue jays that love to visit and chastise me for my many (bird-perceived) sins. Their blue is a welcome contrast with so much white. If you're looking for some local reading over the weekend between Olympic or Super Bowl viewing, I encourage you to check out the latest draft of the Town's 2025-2045 Comprehensive Plan. Short on time? The Executive Summary is a high-level overview and a great place to start. The next advisory committee meeting is on Wednesday, Feburary 11th @ 5:30pm at Town Hall. The next Town Board meeting is on Tuesday, February 10th @ 7pm at Town Hall. You can check out the whole packet here, as well as get the link to attend remotely. We will be holding two public hearings on increasing our tax exemptions for seniors and disabled property owners, as well as bring the building code into alignment with recent changes to New York State Building and Energy codes. (As well as lots of other items!) DANGEROUSLY COLD ARCTIC AIR BLANKETS REGION THIS WEEKEND; EXTREME COLD WARNING ISSUED: From Tompkins County Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Binghamton have issued an Extreme Cold Warning for all of Central NY and Northeastern PA from early Saturday morning through early Sunday afternoon. A very cold Arctic blast with windy conditions (30-45 mph gusts) and extremely cold wind chills (down to -30F) is expected from early Saturday morning into Sunday morning. The Department of Emergency Response is reminding residents to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and adjust plans to avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day: · Avoid travel if possible. If you must go outside: dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and make sure at least one other person knows your whereabouts. · Watch for signs of hypothermia: confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness and stiff muscles. Seek medical attention if you experience these symptoms. If no help is available, the victim should be warmed slowly with warm liquids, along with dry clothes and blankets. · If you are stranded in a vehicle, avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by running the motor for 10 minutes every hour. While your car is running, open the windows slightly for fresh air. Keep your exhaust pipe clear of any obstructions. 2/10/26, 9:22 AM Ulysses Updates for 2/10/26 - Casey Beck - Outlook about:blank 1/3 · Tips to operate generators safely: https://www.dhses.ny.gov/generator For more information on winter weather and cold weather safety, go to: https://www.tompkinscountyny.gov/tompkinsready or https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold UPCOMING MEETINGS/HEARINGS: Town Board meeting & Public Hearings- Tues. 2/10 at 7pm Comp Plan Steering Committee- Wed. 2/11 at 5:30pm · NOTE- A new draft is ready for you to peruse and give feedback on!
