After so many years of lovely, warm-ish weather on Halloween, tonight will be brisk and windy! Nevertheless, I know the trick-or-treaters will be intrepid, and those handing out candy will see many happy faces at their doorstep. Once again, the Village will be closing streets, which truly makes it a magical experience for treat-seekers of all ages. If you are out this evening and want to warm up or need your kids to eat something before candy, please visit us at Town Hall! We'll be offering up pizza and treats, and encouraging everyone to take our survey as our community plans how to use the generous donation of land by the Pritts Family. Earlier this week, I met with Legislator Anne Koreman, Mayor Rordan Hart, Town Clerk Carissa Parlato, and representatives from the Trumansburg Food Pantry and Mutual Aid cabinets to coordinate on expected federal elimination of food benefits effective November 1. About 8% of Ulysses residents (about 400 people) currently receive federal food benefits. Please see their program information further in the newsletter, as well as information from Tompkins County about resources and support. If you can, supporting the Trumansburg Food Pantry with financial donations is an excellent way to directly address food insecurity in Ulysses. Every other week, they've been serving about 100 households on average, which costs $2500. These numbers are expected to increase. Donations can be of any size, and can be made online. Ulysses is amazing at coming together in celebrations and in hardship. Thank you to everyone who makes this such a wonderful community. COUNTY ISSUES EMERGENCY ORDER TO SUPPORT RESIDENTS DURING SNAP PAUSE: On October 30, Tompkins County Administrator Korsah Akumfi issued an Emergency Order authorizing up to $50,000 in county funds to purchase and distribute food to county residents affected by the likely pause of federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, SNAP benefits are expected to be paused beginning November 1, 2025, leaving many residents without access to essential food support. According to the Tompkins County Department of Social Services, approximately 7,200 county residents currently rely on SNAP benefits. Under the Emergency Order, the county will work with local food banks and community food programs to purchase and distribute staple food items, helping to ensure that individuals and families have access to food during this period of disruption. Support for households: • We recognize that food security is a fundamental need, and these uncertainties can cause stress and confusion. If you or someone you know needs immediate food, utility, or heating assistance, contact the Tompkins County DSS at 607-274-5680. • You can also dial 2-1-1 to speak to someone who can help connect you to community services 24/7, or text your zip code to TXT211 (898211) during regular business hours. Local resources provide free food and prepared meals (locations and daily schedule) and non-perishable food in outdoor food cabinets (map with locations). Financial contributions are the fastest, most efficient way to help, allowing the Food Pantry to purchase additional food through regional food banks and local partners to meet demand. 100% of your donation goes directly to the Trumansburg Food Pantry. The committee must approve a final draft before it goes to the Town Board for review and final adoption. View just the Goals & Objectives or the full document. Requires State to add 2,500 acres of new forest land in Adirondack Park. (A no vote does not authorize this use). SHARE YOUR VENISON HARVEST: Hunters can drop off any legally harvested, tagged, and reported deer at one of Feeding New York State's participating deer processors.
