(" Please note: A statewide burn ban is in effect since yesterday due to increased fire risk and continued dry conditions. The ban will be in effect for 14 days (through October 15) and will then be re-evaluated. The ban prohibits: • fires for purposes of brush and debris disposal • all uncontained fires, including campfires and open fires used for cooking • (Burning garbage or leaves is already prohibited year-round in New York State) Backyard fire pits and contained campfires- less than three feet in height and four feet in length, width or diameter- are allowed, as are small, contained cooking fires. But rest up, because on Monday, October 6 the Town will be hosting a Comprehensive Plan Open House at the Racker Center from 4pm-7pm and we would love YOUR participation. Hearing from the public directly is one of the best parts of my job, and I am deeply grateful to my fellow volunteers on the Comprehensive Plan Committee working to deliver for our community a plan for the next 20 years that truly reflects the goals and needs of Ulyssians. The event is interactive, and food and drinks will be provided. Peruse and let us know what you think! INFLATION REFUND CHECKS FROM NYS: More than eight million New Yorkers will get an Inflation Refund check of up to $400. Deliveries will continue through October and November. No forms or signup required — if you qualify, your check is on the way. PUBLIC HEARINGS SCHEDULED IN ITHACA ON NYSEG RATES: Tompkins County urges residents to participate in upcoming public hearings regarding proposed rate changes by New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E). These hearings are part of a statewide review process by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to gather community feedback on proposed rate increases, service changes, and the potential impact on their communities. Public input will directly help inform the PSC's decisions. This is a great way to get involved and learn more about the town. Planning Board- Seeking 2 alternates (1-year appointment). Typically meets at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. Duties include: • Review and decisions on various land use permits including site plan review and special use permits; • Recommendations to the Board of Zoning Appeals on variance applications, and • Recommendations to the Town Board planning goals, policies and long-range plans, such as the Comprehensive Plan, rezones, and zoning code revisions. Board of Zoning Appeals- Seeking 1 alternate (1-year appointment). Typically meets once a month at 7pm on the 3rd Wednesday. Duties include: • Hearing requests and issuing decisions on variances for proposed land uses or developments that do not comply with current local zoning code; and • Issuing decisions on appeals of any order, requirement, decision, interpretation, or determination made by the Zoning Officer. Details: • Voter registration: Must be received by Tompkins County Board of Elections no later than October 25, 2025 • Sample ballot for Ulysses • Early Voting Dates • Statewide ballot proposal: Amendment to Allow Olympic Sports Complex in Essex County on State Forest Preserve Land: Allows skiing and related trail facilities on state forest preserve land. The site is 1,039 acres. Requires State to add 2,500 acres of new forest land in Adirondack Park. A yes vote authorizes new ski trails and related facilities in the Adirondack forest preserve. A no vote does not authorize this use.
