UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR OLSON
Greetings, Ulyssians!
I recently learned that the phrase "dog days of summer" dates back to the Romans and the star Sirius
appearing in the sky near the sun at the peak of the heat near the end of July. This period was known as
the "days of the dog star," and over time the "star" part was dropped. We certainly have heat still in
front of us, but we collectively lived through some very hot and dry days, and these cooler mornings
become a special treat in comparison. I know the weather change is certainly much appreciated by
farmers, gardeners, and student athletes flocking to the fields for early morning practice... including my
eldest who starts high school this year and who needs a 6:45am ride to his first of two soccer practices
each morning! (Freshmen get an orientation on their first day; I deeply feel I've already been initiated, as
any parent who has ever needed to extract a teenager from their bed early in the morning, day after
day, appreciates.)
Space, and kids, and recreation have been very much on my mind this summer, and I would like to
deeply thank everyone who has taken an opportunity to comment ---for and against ---on the potential
donation of land by the Pritts family. Over the last several months, the Town has been going through the
process to seek environmental feedback and gather recommendations for ways to make the property
less of a burden for the surrounding neighborhood. I live very close to Taughannock State Park and
deeply empathize that change can be stressful and anxiety inducing. I am personally committed to
making any future development as thoughtful and considerate as possible.
I would like to invite the public to participate in our next special Town Board meeting, which will be held
on Wednesday, August 27 at 5pm at Town Hall. At this meeting, we will again open up the meeting to
the public to share their thoughts and opinions, in addition to the dozens of messages already
submitted. Lots of information about the proposed donation is available here, and more comments are
