So I decided to take a look at Grove Cemetery. Here is what I found: about:blank 1/4 7/1/25, 10:03AM i ryr * s 1 Ulysses updates for 6/27/25 - Casey Beck - Outlook f V. • - 'ti AI 40 lot - This is the Rufous -Backed Cellophane Bee, Colletes thoracicus, observed on June 4 at Grove Cemetery in The "Unequal Cellophane Bee", Colletes inaequalis (on left) flying toward its nest. There were hundreds of these nests aggregated in two locations at Grove Cemetery. i IL The third type I observed is known as a mining bee from the genus Andrena. Note that these ground -nesting bees are not aggressive, and do not sting (unlike ground -nesting hornets). about:blank 2/4 7/1/25, 10:03AM Ulysses updates for 6/27/25 - Casey Beck - Outlook As mentioned in last month's article, ground nesting bees represent over half of the estimated 450 species of native bees in New York. Each female does all the work of excavating her nest (or nests), provisioning it with pollen to feed her offspring, and sealing it. Her presence above ground only lasts for a few weeks, and there is only one generation per year. Let's applaud these hardworking females, busy at work rearing the next generation all by themselves. MOTH BALLS PROTECT YOUR CLOTHES„ NOT YOUR GARDEN From NYSDEC With sunnier days and blooming flowers, summer is in full swing! You may be looking for ways to protect your garden, yard, or even your attic from hungry critters, but moth balls are not the answer. Moth balls start as a solid form of insecticide that slowly release chemicals to kill clothes moths and carpet beetles. These vapors are harmful to both humans and animals alike; therefore, moth balls are only to be used in airtight spaces. Every year, the NYSDEC receives dozens of complaints regarding the use of moth balls to repel domestic animals and wildlife indoors and outdoors. Moth balls are not designed to be used in this manner. This use creates a risk of pesticide exposure to people, pets, wildlife, and the environment. Instead, visit Cornell IPM's website to learn about methods to safely and effectively keep pests away from your garden and home.
