FEMA has updated its flood maps (will go into effect June 18), and some local properties are now in flood plains. Messages purport to be Final Notifications related to E-Z Pass or Enforcement Penalties for outstanding traffic tickets. DO NOT CLICK ON THESE LINKS OR PROVIDE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION. A good test of whether the message is legitimate is to look at the sender's address. Often it will begin with "e-zpass" or "nydmv" but will end with a bunch of weird letters and then ".us" to make it look official. Visit the DMV's page on this here. DEC ANNOUNCES START OF 2025 'NYHABS' ONLINE NOTIFICATION AND REPORTING SYSTEM FOR HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS (HABs)_ From DEC DEC's New York Harmful Algal Bloom System (NYHABS) is now active and allows the public and trained citizens to send reports of HABs to DEC electronically via a simple, user- and mobile phone-friendly form. Reports are evaluated by DEC and DOH and once confirmed, are posted to the NYHABS page. The system features an interactive map of current and archived bloom locations to help keep New Yorkers informed. When it comes to HABs, DEC encourages New Yorkers to: • Know It— HABs vary in appearance from scattered green dots in the water, to long, linear green streaks, pea soup, or spilled green paint, to blue-green or white coloration. • Avoid It— People, pets, and livestock should avoid contact with water that is discolored or has algal scums on the surface. • Report It—The public should report a suspected HAB through the NYHABS online reporting form available on DEC's website. Report health concerns related to HABs to DOH at harmfulalgae@health.ny,gov, or contact your local health department. The Ulysses Water Source Protection Plan Committee (WSPPC). has been working with NYS to put together a Drinking Water Source Protection Plan to: Develop an Overview of the Water System Prepare a Drinking Water Source Protection Map Create a Potential Contaminant Source Inventory Identify Protection and Management Methods Develop an Implementation Timeline. Look for more details in the future. about:blank 2/4 6/2/25, 10:04 AM Ulysses Updates for 5/30/25-Casey Beck-Outlook SNAKE SEASON: From DEC Snakes assist with pest control by preying on insects, rodents, and other small animals, helping prevent the need to use potentially harmful chemicals such as insecticides and rodenticides. These chemicals can harm the target species as well as non-target wildlife, including humans. Smaller, more widespread snake species, such as eastern garter, northern brown, and smooth green snakes, consume pests such as slugs, caterpillars, and other invertebrates that can be damaging to garden produce and ornamentals. Larger species with more restricted distributions, such as ratsnake and copperhead, ambush and consume their fair share of rodents that can otherwise be a detriment to our homes and living spaces. Armed with this information, the next time you happen upon one of our states' seventeen species of native snakes while working or relaxing in your backyard space, consider simply observing from a distance rather than reacting in fear. Take a moment to appreciate the value that our state's legless vertebrate friends embody in relation to the natural environment and share this perspective with family and friends. Note that all native snakes are protected by law in New York State (Environmental Conservation Law and NYCRR Title 6, Section 3.3). If you're unsure about the species of a snake you've encountered, check out the snake identification chart on the DEC website or contact your regional DEC wildlife office.
