IN THIS WEEK'S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Update from Supervisor Public Hearing on Flood Damage Prevention Well and Septic Care Program Annual Water Quality Report for Ulysses Water Districts 3 & 4 Bee Facts Election Sticker Contest Vaping/Cannabis and Youth UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR OLSON Greetings, Ulyssians! Is anyone else interested in seeing the sun again? Do we have any proof that it still exists? I'm pretty sure only the frogs and the weeds are enjoying this much steady rain. I'm delighted to share that Ulysses was selected by Cornell Design Connect to receive community engagement services for recreational planning purposes. I'm very excited to support a planning process that thoughtfully considers how best to serve the public as the Town continues to consider accepting a generous land donation for our first Town recreational park. The Town Board applied for this process so that any future park planning and development engages the public directly, and this will give the community to directly guide a design for a future park that meets community and neighborhood needs. Our next Town Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27 at 7pm and the agenda packet is available here. We will be getting a presentation on the exciting developments happening at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts, holding a public hearing on a flood prevention law required by NYS and the federal government, and discussing the potential of Tompkins County taking over address numbering. As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I want to share my appreciation for the men and women who died in service to the United States. As the granddaughter of a veteran and the wife of a first responder, I also want to recognize the family members who served at home and suffered the greatest loss. As Eleanor Roosevelt recognized, "Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. Town of Ulysses Water Districts 3 and 4 receive water from Bolton Point. BEE FACTS: From the Ulysses Bee Committee This time of year, you may be used to seeing honeybees buzzing around flowers and fruit trees gathering pollen and nectar. But did you know that unlike honeybees, most bee species are solitary, ground nesting bees? In fact, ninety percent of all bees are solitary and seventy percent of bees build nests in the ground. Ground -nesting bees are important pollinators that play a big role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Unlike honeybees, they don't produce honey, and they don't live in hives or colonies; instead, each female builds her own nest, often a small tunnel in loose, sandy soil or bare patches of ground. These bees are gentle by nature and rarely sting, usually only if they feel threatened or if their nest is disturbed. You might spot tiny mounds of soil with a small hole in the center —that's a solitary bee's nest entrance. Even though they're considered solitary bees, they often can be found in large aggregations of nesting sites, even hundreds right next to each other. Ground nesting bees are extremely beneficial to plants and crops, and help to pollinate a wide variety of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. You can help support these hardworking pollinators by leaving some open, undisturbed ground in your yard or garden and avoiding pesticides. Watching them buzz from flower to flower can be a reminder of the small creatures that keep our natural world in balance. about:blank 2/4 5/27/25, 10:13 AM Ulysses Updates for 5/23/25 - Casey Beck - Outlook Final fun fact: A favorite nesting site is in old cemeteries. Why? It's not because they love boring down to dead bodies, but that the sandy loam soil that humans find easy to dig for graves is likewise easy for insects to bore down through. The sand makes it loose, and the loam helps keep the tunnel from collapsing. The next time you walk through an old cemetery - and Ulysses has a few - keep your eyes open for ground -nesting bee sites. 2025 BOARD OF ELECTIONS STICKER CONTEST DEADLINE: Submit your artwork by May 26, 2025! VAPING/CANNABIS USE PREVENTION, SUPPORT RESOURCES FOR YOUTH/FAMILIES: From Tompkins County Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH), in collaboration with community partners, encourages parents and caregivers to talk with their children about the risks and harms associated with smoking, vaping, and ingesting THC-containing cannabis products, such as edibles and gummies, all of which are appealing to youth due to their candy -like appearance and flavoring. Adults who use tobacco, cannabis, or other substances and have children and youth in the household are advised to keep these products locked away, out of sight and out of reach. Children and youth who use THC-containing products can become very ill and are at increased risk of unintentional poisoning. The legal age for purchasing cannabis, tobacco, vape products, and smoking paraphernalia is 21. Sale of flavored tobacco products is illegal. TCWH recommends adults purchase cannabis products only from licensed dispensaries that are required to adhere to strict product quality and safety standards. TCWH strongly advises against using products of unknown source, quality, and content due to the risk of contamination. Synthetic substances, such as fentanyl, may often be added into unregulated drug products to increase consumption and are highly associated with risk of unintentional overdose death. Poisoning and overdose prevention awareness is strongly encouraged. Signs of an opioid overdose include stupor, changes in pupillary size (pinpoint size pupils), cold and clammy skin, cyanosis (blue discoloration of the skin), coma and respiratory failure leading to death. about:blank 3/4 5/27/25, 10:13 AM Ulysses Updates for 5/23/25 - Casey Beck - Outlook Additional information on the harmful effects of cannabis on teens: • CDC: Cannabis and Teens NYS Office of Addiction Services & Supports: Cannabis Toolkit for Parents and Mentors Additional information about youth and vaping: • Talking, with Your Teen About Vaping (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - SAMHSA) • Keep Your Focus Not Your Fix Youth Anti-Vaping Campaign (T-Free Zone: Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango) • Why are youth attracted to vaping?
