UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR OLSON:
Greetings, Ulyssians!
Many thanks to the hundreds of residents who have participated in our Comprehensive Planning
process, including attending our open house and forums, and filling out our community survey. The
Comprehensive Plan committee will be reviewing the feedback from the community in the coming
weeks, and there will be additional opportunities for the public to share their hopes, dreams, and
concerns for the Town as we collectively work together to craft our plan for the next two decades of life
in Ulysses. Keep up to date with all of these happenings here.
On Tuesday, April 8th at 7pm the Town Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed land donation.
Members of the public are encouraged to share their thoughts in person or online, as well as submit
comments in advance to clerk(@townofulyssesnygov. All comments received to date will be
incorporated into the public feedback. If you're interested in learning more about the project, read the
FAQs posted, or view the thoughts of your fellow citizens on the potential donation, check that
out here. The full town board packet for the April 8th meeting, including the Zoom link to attend
remotely, is available here.
WHAT'S THE BUZZ?- from the Town of Ulysses Bee Committee
Spring Garden Cleanup: Three Tips to Help Our Native Bees
It has been a long wait to get our hands back in the soil. The anticipation for new life has the ardent
gardener kneeling on the ground in search of green tips pushing through the blanket of brown leaves.
Today I was rewarded by a first flowering of purple violets. Also, amongst the broken stems and leafy
debris, I know that chrysalises and larvae of next season's butterflies and moths are well camouflaged so
tread lightly! Stem -nesting bee larvae in the hollow stems of perennials will feed on the pollen left by
their mothers when the time is right. Ulysses Bee Committee wishes to share a few best practices for a
bee and pollinator friendly spring.

Ulysses Updates for 4/4/25 - Casey Beck - Outlook
1. Cut back dead flower stalks leaving stem stubble of varying heights, 8-24 inches. The pithy, hollow
stems of raspberry are a favorite! Female bees will start a new nest in the cut or naturally occurring
open stems.
2. Wait to rake leaves until the temperatures are consistently warmer. If you do rake and clean up in
some areas, stack plant debris in a corner instead of immediately discarding it. This allows any hidden
pollinators a chance to emerge.
3. Leave some areas undisturbed to provide ongoing habitat. Stacks of old wood and patches of bare or
lightly covered dirt are essential for ground and cavity nesting solitary bees. Ground bees can find their
way out through light leaf coverings but have a tougher time with heavier wood chips.

Mason bees lay their eggs in wood or hollow stems, then seal the compartment with mud. They
overwinter as pupae, and are one of the earliest solitary bees to emerge in the spring. These adults were

NYS requires all cats, dogs, and ferrets to have their first rabies vaccination between 3 and 4 months of
age. Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system (brain and
spinal cord). Infected mammals can transmit the rabies virus to humans and other mammals. Rabies is
almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
