Tree Planting Tracker UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR OLSON Greetings, Ulyssians! Earlier this week, I presented to the public a very generous and exciting donation offer by Marvin and Allison Pritts for 15.234 acres of land on Cold Springs Road. The purpose of this donation would be to give Ulysses the opportunity to be able to work with the community to develop the Town's first publicly owned recreation park in our over 230-year history. The Town Board is in the very early stages of considering this offer. On Tuesday, the Board passed a resolution expressing interest in further exploring the potential of the donation, and the next step will be the preparation of an initial environmental review form. There will be many opportunities for members of the community to get engaged in the process. All of our Town Board meetings have public comment periods at the beginning and the end of the meetings, and you can also send public comments to clerk@townofulyssesny.gov. The next Town Board meeting is on Tuesday, February 25 at 7pm. Personally, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the Pritts family for considering such a sizable donation to the Town. The Town is not in the position to be able to purchase land for park purposes, even though several property owners reached out in 2024 with offers to negotiate land purchases. If the Town Board accepts the donation, I think it would allow our community to plan together to create a park that provides accessible 2 public space to our residents of all ages. With so much negativity in the news, this is an example to me of how individuals can choose to make a positive difference in the lives of others, at home in their own community. Details about the donation offer, including a statement by the Pritts and information slides, are available on the Town's website here. COMP PLAN UPDATE: Your voice is needed! The Town is in the process of updating its Comprehensive Plan- the guiding document for land use, laws, policies... Comp plans are most successful when citizens from all aspects of the town are represented. Get involved in one the following ways:  website  survey  photo contest  View past meetings on Youtube BIRD FLU: From Tompkins County: 4 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is caused by an influenza type A virus that is carried by free-flying waterfowl and other waterbirds such as ducks, geese, and shorebirds, but can also infect domestic poultry (chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, domestic ducks, geese, and guinea fowl), raptors, corvids (crows and ravens), and mammals. HPAI is not new; one strain of avian flu (H5N1) has been circulating in wild birds across the US and poultry in New York State since 2022. There have been no human cases reported in NYS. Nearly all reported positive cases in humans have been traced back from prolonged direct contact with infected poultry and dairy cattle respiratory secretions or feces. To reduce risk of exposure, avoid or limit contact with any dead birds you may come across, and keep children and pets away from them. As a reminder, the proper handling and cooking of poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165 ˚F kills bacteria and viruses. Avoid uncooked food products such as unpasteurized raw milk or cheeses. Birds from affected flocks have not entered the food system. Farm workers who work with infected poultry or dairy cattle are at increased risk of avian influenza. To reduce this risk, some people who work directly with birds or cattle should wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Which PPE workers should wear depends on their risk of exposure. See What measures can be put in place to help protect farm workers (NYSDOH). WELL & SEPTIC WORKSHOP The Town is working with the NY State Department of Health and RCAP Solutions to host a free workshop in May for homeowners and residents that rely on private wells and/or onsite wastewater treatment/septic systems. At this two-hour workshop, homeowners will have an opportunity to ask the experts questions about testing, maintenance, and more. If you're interested in attending, please help determine the best date/time by completing this quick survey. Thanks! TREE TRACKER: Have you planted a tree in New York since January 1, 2024? You can use DEC’s new Tree Tracker to count your planting project toward our goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033! Governor Hochul launched the 25 Million Trees Initiative in the 2024 State of the State address to invigorate New York State’s tree planting efforts. This initiative advances the climate equity and reforestation goals outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and contributes to New York’s efforts to help mitigate climate change. Every tree planted is a step toward a healthier, greener New York. Whether you’re planting one tree or hundreds, make sure every tree counts by recording it in our Tree Tracker. Trees planted in 2024 and on count toward the statewide total. For more information and to record trees you've planted, visit DEC’s website . THANKS FOR READING TO THE END!
