My driveway is an ice rink, more snow is forecast for this weekend, and like many residents I've been monitoring local, state and national news for how it may impact Ulysses. In my work as a teacher, I've encouraged my students to make their corner of the world a better place. Sometimes that is the most we are capable of doing, as so much of life remains out of our individual control. Regardless of where we find ourselves, I believe we each possess the ability to brighten, improve or enhance our communities. I am grateful to the many people in Ulysses who give their time, talents, and resources to make things more accessible, more sustainable, safer, healthier or beautiful. At the Town, my priority has been and will continue to be a careful steward of public resources and a thoughtful manager of our Town government in ways that are legal, respectful, civil and sustainable. I have worked to verify that the $2.8 million the Town has been awarded in the last 2 1/2 years for major infrastructure projects is not dependent on federal funds that may disappear. I will continue to monitor these situations, and work with the rest of the Town officials to reduce the adverse impacts of various external activities. I remain focused on managing our numerous existing projects and investing in ways that help all residents lead safer, healthier lives within our beautiful community. Please join us for our upcoming Town Board meeting on Tuesday, February 11. The meeting starts at 7pm and you are welcome to attend in person (@ Town Hall) or remotely. The Zoom link and the board packet are available here. Participating in our local democracy is a wonderful way to connect with others. From Ulysses Bee Friendly Committee Bees disappear from our sight in the winter, but where do they go and what are they doing? Honeybees (which are non-native to the U.S. and came from Europe) survive the winter by tightly clustering together inside their hive and vibrating their wing muscles to create heat to keep warm. They feed off stores of honey for energy, and their activity keeps the hive at about 91o F. Our native bees don’t use this strategy and can be broadly categorized into 3 nesting groups: ground nesting, cavity nesting and bumblebees. Ground nesting bees are in general solitary and lay eggs in ground nests. Cavity nesting bees are also solitary, but they lay their eggs above ground in places like twigs, hollow stems, under bark and in wood. Each egg is laid in its own compartment along with pollen and nectar (“bee bread”) to serve as food for developing larvae. And then, come winter, the adults die while the next generation lies in wait for the warmer days of spring and summer. 3 Then there are our native bumblebees, which are social like the non-native honeybees. They mostly nest underground but occasionally will use above ground cavities. In the winter, the whole original colony dies … except newly mated queens. They go off on their own and burrow down into the earth, under leaf litter or in wood piles, entering a hibernation-like state until the following spring when they emerge and look for a choice spot to start a new nest. This Mason bee overwinters in wooden cavities in the pupal stage and is one of the earliest native bees to emerge in the spring. At Kashong Point alone, an estimated 50-60 geese have been found along just a few properties, but the total number of affected birds is likely much higher across the region. These geese have tested positive for Avian Influenza, and other bird species may also be at risk. SLPWA is working closely with local officials and DEC staff to manage the removal of these birds. If you find dead birds: -Avoid direct contact (wear gloves if necessary) -Keep pets and children away -Report findings to the NYSDEC wildlife hotline (585-226-5380) or use the Avian Influenza Read more from SLPWA: https://conta.cc/4aHDvsz Additional information: Gov.
