RADON AWARENESS WEEK
Radon is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that can cause serious health problems, including lung
cancer, if left undetected in your home. Radon is naturally occurring in the ground but can enter the home
through cracks or gaps in the floors or walls. Once the radon is inside the home, the levels can build up over
time. The only way to know if radon is in your home is to test the air for radon levels.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the number one cause of lung
cancer in non-smokers and is the overall second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. A smoker who is
exposed to radon has a much higher chance of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer
deaths annually, with approximately 2,900 of those deaths occurring in non-smokers.
The EPA categorizes counties into zones based on average indoor radon screening levels. Tompkins County
falls within the EPA’s Zone 1 (Red Zone) for counties that have a predicted average indoor radon screening
level greater than 4pCi/L (pico curies per liter). Between 30% to 50% of tests conducted in Tompkins County
have shown levels of radon above 4pCi/L. Living in a Zone 1 area means that it is especially important to test
your home for radon and re-test again every five years. If your home already has a mitigation system in place,
it is important to re-test every two years to ensure the unit is working properly.
Radon home-test kits can be purchased at a variety of home-improvement retailers, such as ACE Hardware
Store, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart. Radon test kits are also available from the New York State
Department of Health for $12.25 each (cost includes testing device, laboratory analysis and postage).
Free radon test kits are available through TCWH’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program (HNP). Staff will provide
instructions on how to use the kits and provide referrals for mitigation services. If needed, HNP staff can assist
in setting up the radon test at your home. To learn more or to schedule an appointment for radon testing with
our HNP staff, please use our online form or call Diana Crouch, Education Coordinator, at 607-274-6702. A
staff member will return your call within one week. Thank you for your patience.
“GET” KIDS?
Intrigued by complex emotions? Loathe boredom? Delight in the absurd?
The Town of Ulysses may have the ideal job for you!
We are seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, abundantly patient individual to provide youth development
programming to 5th-8th graders, after school and during the summer.
3
Candidates must possess appreciation and genuine affection for middle grade youth, and the ability to foster
an inclusive, supportive environment that respects youth in that wonderous and tumultuous space between
child- and adulthood. This position requires understanding and responsiveness to changing group dynamics
and interests, an adaptable and creative approach to plans and planning, and willingness to get in the weeds
(perhaps literally) with youth as they navigate their surroundings.
The right person for this role must be amiable and able to "play nice" with the Youth Commission and Town
staff to develop programming priorities and activities.
Reasonable pay rate ($23/hr)
flexibility with the total weekly hours worked (generally 10-15/week)
primary service hours will be after school until ~5:30pm
admin support provided to allow for a primary focus on delivering involved, interactive
programming for youth
Could be an ideal supplemental job for school district support staff!
Experience working with and engaging youth is strongly preferred; additional training and support will be
provided as needed and appropriate.
