IN THIS WEEK’S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Update from Town Supervisor Upcoming meetings Job Opening Hip Hop for Middle Schoolers NYS State of the State Address Bee Committee Meeting Food Pantry Tourism Grants Rabies Vaccination Clinic UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR OLSON Happy New Year, Ulyssians! Is it too late to continue wishing everyone a happy 2025? I contend not, since this is my first newsletter of 2025. I'm pleased to announce that the Town received its third infrastructure grant in less than two years, this one for $520,352 for the Garrett Road Culvert. This brings our infrastructure grants to more than $2.8 million since 2023. These are important funding sources that offset the costs to the local taxpayer because they require minimal local investment. To date, we have received funds to replace the Curry Road bridge (work happening in 2025), the Maplewood Road culvert (tentatively to be replaced in 2026), and now the Garrett Road culvert. With this latest project, the Town will be replacing the currently undersized culvert with a new arch culvert with a natural channel bottom. This will help the Town reduce erosion, stabilize the streambank, and improve aquatic connectivity as our water flows down to Cayuga Lake. These projects are critical to protecting the Town from rapid rain event and the broader impacts of climate change. The Town received an additional planning grant in 2023 from the NY Department of Environmental Conservation that we used in 2024 to identify the 6 most threatened culverts in Ulysses. Curry Road and Garret Road were at the top of that list, and I plan to continue to advocate for applying for grants to replace other deteriorated assets to offset the financial and environmental impact to Ulysses taxpayers. In other news, do you have a passion for working with middle schoolers and supporting their emotion and social growth? Ulysses is actively recruiting for a new employee in our Youth Development team. More information is available below and here on our website. Deadline to apply is January 31. 2 As many of you know from previous messages, I grew up in Southern California, about 40 miles outside of Los Angeles. I imagine many of you have friends or relatives whose lives may be impacted by the devastating wildfire, or you may have visited in person or via a movie or show or book. My mother lives outside LA to the south, and I have many friends and former classmates in the area, and I am holding the impacted communities in my heart. It is a fearful time for anyone in the vicinity of the flames, smoke and ash. When one of my sons complained about the cold this morning, I responded how grateful I was to be living here in Upstate NY. We certainly are not immune to the wrath of Mother Nature and climate change, but I am so very pleased to be working with a great local team of staff and volunteers who are committed to helping our community adapt in a sustainable manner. If you are interested in getting involved, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at supervisor@townofulyssesny.gov. A NOTE FROM THE ULYSSES BEE COMMITTEE (aka THE BEE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY COMMITTEE): You may have noticed signs at the State Route entrances to the town that proclaim that Ulysses is a Bee City. And perhaps you wondered what that meant. The Ulysses Bee Committee was appointed in 2023, and completed a series of steps that enabled us to call Ulysses a “Bee City USA affiliate” beginning in early 2024. (While technically the town is not a city, there is no bee town or bee village designation!) We’re a group of volunteers who work together on pollinator conservation with support from the nonprofit Xerces Society. We do that through encouraging the development of pollinator-friendly habitats, reducing the use of pesticides, and holding education events so people can become more pollinator aware, and realize just how awesome native pollinators are. There are 225 Bee City affiliates in the US, and we are just the second Bee City in New York State, although there are several campuses in the state, including SUNY Cortland, Binghamton University, and Hobart and William Smith, that are Bee Campus USA affiliates. You can find more information on requirements, goals and achievements of the Bee City program at the Bee City website. Our small, friendly group includes people from diverse backgrounds, including landscape gardening, entomology, and beekeeping. We meet most months on the third Saturday of the month in Town Hall at 10 am. Our meetings are open to the public, and if you’d like to attend, it’s probably a good idea to check with the committee chair, Mary Bouchard, (email: bouchard@townofulyssesny.gov) to make sure we’re having a meeting that month. Our next meeting is Saturday, January 18th. We will be posting informational articles on pollinator topics in the town newsletter on a monthly basis.
